Topic: Tulagi to Treasury ? |

Can someone tell me how far to Treasury Island from Tulagi?
distance is nice, but in lay mans terms, how long did it take?
Also, anyone have a guess how he would have traveled?
He was assigned to Ron 9 on Dec. 4, 1943 probably on Tulagi or Guadalcanal at the time.
I read in a war diary by Gene Schade, who was on Stirling at the time. His entry in his diary said that the 154 came back from Tulagi for repair on Dec. 16, 1943. in the next sentence he said that they got 19 new men, mostly seaman. Father In-law was a Seaman 2c
He didn't say they came with the 154, but he didn't say they didn't.
just wondering if my father in-law came on the 154 after being assigned to Ron 9 at Tulagi- he was not assigned to a boat at this time. But he could have hitched the ride ?

he probably was assigned to ron 9 in numea.from there he probabkly qwent to the can to wait for next boat going to tulagi.wh en he got to tulagi h e probably went aboard the boat he was assigned to in rion 8,
dont know the mileage from canal to tulagi but the trip was probably endwed the same day he left the canal.
aBOUT THIS TIME THERE WERE A LOT OF MEN WAITING TO GO H OME FOR R AND R DUE TO THE LENGTH OF TIME THEY HAD SPENT ON THE BOATS AND BASES.

Hey Earl,
Thank you for your input, I will add that from his military records I know that he left Noumea enroute for Guadalcanal on Nov. 26 on a LCI -
If that trip takes two days, he was either on Guadalcanal or went to Tulagi on Nov. 28, 1943. the only reason I put Tulagi in there is from other veterans experiances and what I read about Tulagi. so Tulaghi is just a possibility I throw in there.
The next entry in his records is the assignment to Ron 9 on Dec. 4, 1943
After that all his records tell me is rate change and what battle stars he qualified for in this time period.
All I can do at this point is follow Ron 9 and ask others questions.
So my question is, How far in distance and time to Treasury from Tulaghi ?
Do you think he would have taken a PT boat?
Could that entry in the war diary from Gene Schade & the 154's arrival be significant?
Thanks for your help Earl, I always love hearing from you. I just had to clear that up in order for you to help me any further on this question.

Nat, Thank you for this log book entry.
I am sorry I don't understand it. Could someone tell me what this means?
Sesapi is the same place as Tulagi, right?
I don't know what moore means, the left hand side of the book does not have a date, I am thinking that each page is a 24 hour day, If I
am right about that, does this mean that it took one day to get there?

Julie we made the trip from Treasury to Tulagi to get repairs after our encounter with 4 Jap barges. From Treasury to Rendova is about 145 miles. According to Mr. Raney's diary it took us 5 1/2 hours. We stayed overnight at Rendova. From Rendova to Tulagi is about 200 miles. Sea was pretty rough- It took us 9 hours. The total distance from Treasury to Tulagi is about 345 miles. Total travel time 14 1/2 hours. Hope this answers your question.

there were,imn a sense,two bases in the baay/lagoon at tulagi.there was the main base and across from it the little repaiir base at sesapi.sesapii was originally a native village that the japanese took over.later the us marines
took it over from them,the seabbes worked on the vvilll;age a little and the uis naby made it a pt boat repairr base.sesapi is where i weas taken,by pt boat, from guadalcanal and that is where i stayed for a short time before beimng finally assigned to go to emirau for assignm,emnt to my boat.they did not have much there.a metal walkramop of aircraft treads from the pier to the end of tthe village.a torpedo shop and rep[aif shop[ on the left and huts, on stilts fopr us to live in.there was a smallm huut at the end on rright hand side that was used for an officer to indoctrinate us.he also had us make out our wills and allotment pares inside the hut.there were also termts set up all around the area for the base force guys.it was a muddy,dirty and bug infested area.also very hiot and humid. earl

The two boats left Treasury at 1400 (2pm) and arrived in Tulagi at 0620 (6:20am). Sesapi is the PT Base on Tulagi Island.

I realize on this trip you hit rough weather, but in good weather, did you guys, normally do this trip at 25-30 knots? Normally making it in 10 hours? The reason I ask, I did VA Beach to Newport R.I. (past the Statue of Liberty and thru Hells Gate, NYC) in 10 hours, in my MKVSOC in 2001.

Ted if I remember right we would usually cruise at about 2000 R.P.M. which was about 25-28 knots.
