For All here;
I just recieved the news that MKVSOC 963 will soon be on display at the UDT/SEAL Museum in FT. Pierce, FLA. My former Commodore, Captain (SEAL) Mike Howard USN(Ret.) is just doing an outstanding job as the Museum director. If any of you get the opportunity, I highly recommend you go, This mueum is like no other,
MKVSOC 963 was the other boat in my Det Four(1999-2000), and the Boat Captain was Chip Mielkey. My Boat MKVSOC 964, which I was DET LEAD Navigator on, is currently in storage at another location. My first MKVSOC 951, Det One, is currently on display as a "Lawn Ornament" outside of NSWG FOUR here at Little Creek.
82' length 17.5' beam and 47 + KTS!
One day back in 2000, 963 and 964 were headed out, we left Little Creek harbor channel at 0600 and by 1200, we were passing the Statue of Liberty! We were headed to Newport R.I to train with a ST8 platoon. The ocean that day was like glass all the way up! We just flew! Man, these boats were FUN! I really really miss them alot!
Take care,
TED

Ted,

Had the pleasure of visiting the UDT/SEAL Museum in Ft. Pierce a couple of times in the mid/late-1990's when my youngest brother lived in nearby Port St. Lucie. You're right -- it is a great museum. Wish I could see your MKVSOC 963, but don't know when I'll ever get back there.

The last time I was there, I happened to look up at a certain spot in the museum, and hanginging from the overhead above me was a paddle board with the name "Vogel" on it. I've always wondered if it belonged to Joe Vogel, a former UDT (21?) man in the 1950's who taught scuba diving on St. Thomas for many years after he left the Navy. Joe was a close family friend (my parents lived on St. Thomas from 1965-88), and passed away a couple of years ago.

Drew;
I would bet money on it belonging to Joe Vogel, UDT Team 21(BUD/S , Class 19 EC/LC). Joe crossed over to the Frogman gods on May 6, 2010, in Virginia Beach, Va.
My Seadaddy QMCS(SEAL) Jim "PATCHES" Watson was the former museum director and he was UDT 21, SEAL TEAM 2 PLANKOWNER.
After Joe left the Navy in 1961, and moved to ST. Thomas, BUD/S(EAST COAST) was still held at Little Creek until 1973, so as you know dive phase was held at ST Thomas. He stayed connected with the teams for the rest of his life. I know if Joe gave that paddle board to Jim, it would still be where you saw it, the day you went, and with Mike running the place now, it is probably still there today.
Take care,
TED

P.S. I just checked a source I have, TM 2/C Joseph E. Vogel, is the only "Vogel" to graduated a BUD/S East Coast class. YUP, its his paddle board.
