Hello All,
Happy Fathers Day !
My book is going to be late for Fathers Day, but its going to get done.
My first page say's Happy Fathers Day 2013 and I'm not changing it.
But it will be late.
I have a question as I put together the last part of my father in-laws story.
Can anyone tell me about some hairy times weather wise, he might have had on the 156 during the time he was in the area Ron 9 was in during most of 1944?

Even the other end of the spectrum, really super nice weather.
I could put both ends of what might have been his experience weather wise, in a paragraph.

Thanks,
Julie

Julie,
They are called typhoons in the Pacific. There were at least 3 that I found from late 1944 on near the Phillipines. The worst being Typhoon Cobra. There are quite a few book and articles listed on the internet I found just google Typhoon WW2 and they should give you more info.

while i was at emirau island around augyst 1944 A WATER SPOUT FOORMED FROM THE OCEAN,IT WAS A KLARGE ONE,IT CAME INTO THE LAGOON AND HEADED FOR THE SHOWERAS AT THE LEFT END OF THE PIER.A GUY CAME RUNNING OUT AND HEADED UP THE ROAD TO THE BASE AREA,.THE SPOUT HIT THE SHOWER AND TORE IT UP.IT CONTINUED UP THE ROAD THAT THE GUY RAN UP.IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO FOLLOW HIM ASLL THE WAY UP THE ROAD.IT SUDDENLY LEFT THE ROAD AND H EADED INTO THE TRRRS TO THE RUGHT AND DISAPATED FROM THERE.IT WASN,MT FUNNY BUT IT WAS. SEEING A NUDE GUUY RUNNING UP THE ROAD WITH THART SPOUT CHASING HOM PARTWAY UP..
WE HWEADED OUT ON PPATROL; FOR NEW IREKLAND, FROM EMIRAU, AROUNG JUULY OR AUIGUST 1944, WE GOT ABOUT HALFWAY TO STATIOON WHEN A VERY BAD STORM HIT US.. MAYBE A TYPHOON?.I WENT BBELOW TO GET MY DUNGAREE SHIIRT AS THE WATER SPRAY WAS HITTING MY BODY LIKE NEEDLES AND IT HURT.WHEN I REACHED INTO MY LOCKER A VERY KLARGHE WAVE/SWELL HIT THE BMOPW OF THE BOAT.IT THREW ME UP INTO THE AIR NEAR THE OVERHEAD(CELING).THERE IS A ROUNDED BOARD SEPERATING THE BUNKS.IT WAS LIKE SOMEONE GREABBED BOTH MY ;EGS AND SLAMED ME FACE FIRST ON TOP OF THAT BOARD.IT KNOCKED M,E UNCONSIOUS.THEY MIOSSED ME TOPSIDE AND SEMNT SOMEOMNE DOWN TO CHECK ON ME,.HE FOUND ME LYING ON THE DECK SSTILL OUT WITH THER RIGHT SIDE OF MY FACE SPLIT WIDE OOPEN AND BLOOD ALL OVER ME.THE SKIPPER CAME DOPWN AND H AD ME CARRIED INTO THE DAYROOM AND LAID DOWN ON THE BENCH,IT WAS NOT EASY TO DO ALL THIS AS THE STORM WAS STILL RAGING AND THE BOATB WAS BEING THROWN ALL OVER TTHE PLACE. THE GHASH ON MY CHEEK WAS STILL BLEEDING AND WAS ABIOUT TWO INCHES WIDE ACROSS THE RIGHT CHEEKBONE AND THE BONE WAS VISIBLE. HE SUGGESTED THAT IT SHOUKD NORMALLY BE SEWN UP AS IT WAS SO BAD.COUND BOT DO THAT DUE TO THE CONDITIONS.I HAD HIM GET SOME ADHESIVE Tape from his medicine chest and i pulled the skin together and made an x bansdage to hold it all together.also gave me a shoot of brandy to help the pain.coukld niot stay beklow deck so he had me come up and stanzd in the cockpit.the weather got so really bad the skipper had to abort out patrol to new ireland and head back to base.when i got backl to base abnd went to sick bay they told me too much time had passed ibn order to get stitched up and to keep applying the buitterflty bandage like i made om,they gave me a tetanus shoot after cleaning mny face up and said to keep it clean.i haD A BLACK 2 INCH WIDE SCAB ON MY FACE FOR ABOUT THREE WEEKS.FINALLY PULLED THE SCAB OFF.I STILL HAVE THE SCAR ON MY RIGHT CHEEK JUST BNELOW MY RIGGHT EYE.THERE IS A RECORD OF THE STORM BUT FOR SOPME REASON THE SKIPPER DID NOT ENTER THE INCIDENT INTO THE SHIPS LOG.EVERY0NE KNEW ABOUT IT BUT THEY ARE ALL DEAD NOW.

Wow Earl, that's a heck of a story. Lucky you didn't break your neck.

That waterspout story is something too. Dangerous but funny like you said. The poor guy must have been wondering what he did wrong to tee off mother nature so bad. Thank you for sharing them Earl.

Hey Gary and Earl,
Thank you for the information about Typhoons, I didn't know that. Now that I do, I see it more often. I didn't notice before.
thank you Gary.
Earl, your two stories are great ! Just what I was looking for.
thanks
Julie
