Hi Guys.

My first post on this amazingly informative site.

I'm currently trying to build PT-490 from the Italeri 1/35th 596 kit

The Bofors on 490 looks to be mounted differently as using the standard square mount has it sitting far higher than it looks in the pic of 490 at speed. Most the other mods I've found are quite easy to work out.

The gun appears to sit on a circular platform/base but what is between that and the gun assembly itself seems much lower. I'm using the Bofors from Bronco, it's a work of art in itself and wondered if maybe a field mod, they had cut the centre of the carriage and bolted it to the base instead? The pic is far too dark to work out what is under the platform.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks Keith

Hi Keith,
I'm wondering why you chose not to use the 40mm from the Italeri kit and replace it with another. The one from the 596 is very accurate to the best of my knowledge. I would love to know why you chose to build the 490. I had the pleaser and honor of meeting Ed Schultz 2 years ago who was the Chief Gunner on the PT 490. He and the crew had picked up the boat new at Bayonne and served on her all the way through the war participating in the Battle of Surigao Strait. His book, "A Warrior's Tale" would be a great read for you.

Hi Roy.

I chose the Bronco Bofors only because the level of detail on it is outstanding, It even has the internal breech components and what caught my eye was the detail in the ammo feed.

I've ummed and ahhed over which boat to build. Not wanting to do a straight 596. I wanted to do an earlier boat without the rockets that had seen action and David Waples pointed me towards a late 400 or early 500 boat. The scheme is much better than the plainer Channel boats and I liked the configuration of PT490. That and the excellent detail pictures I've found to work from.

I just hope I do it justice.

Well that sounds like a plan Keith. Ed was a great resource I had when I was building the 40mm for my 623 boat. Keep us posted on your build.
