All;
I have come across a few photos, especially in RON 40 and RON 41(PT 600 and PT 603 specifically), where it appears that the charthouse and the port side cockpit bulkhead numbers almost appear to be painted in a different color, with black shading, my guess is a gray. If it is really white, it looks very dingy or discolored, while the surrounding colors appear normal in the black and white photos, any ideas?
Take care,
TEd

Definitely number drop-shadowing on some of the boats; not so sure about the gray - my photos all seem to me to be white.

All;
Looking at photos, I have seen of RON 40 boats stateside, so far, The port side cockpit numbers on PT 593, 594, 600, and RON 41's PT 603, still does not look white with black shading, I still think it is a light gray, I believe only the charthouse number as well as the forward hull numbers were white only and was like this originally. Maybe after arrival in Philippines, these were repainted as solid white only, or maybe in Panama or on the three ships that transported them to the Philippines( the S.S. Joseph P. Bradley, S.S. William H. Crawford. and the S.S. Ben Robinson. all 3 ships were in Panama on 1 August 1945, and arrived at Guiuan Harbor, Samar on 25 Aug, the Crawford left Panama on 9 August and arrived on 17 Sept and the Robinson left on 15 September and arrived on 25 Oct.) The large stern numbers that are provided in the kit, seems like they were painted on sometime after Miami, as the only photos that show this are Bob Hostetter's(Jerry sent some to me) and Frank Shannon's photos of RON 40 already in the Philippines. See below, the PT 594 Underway is just because it looks cool. The Tender photos, one illustrates the oversized stern numbers, the other is just to show the rest of the boats in RON 40.
Take care,
Ted

Ted, I hope this doesn't sound to silly but could those numbers just have a layer of dirt on them giving them a grayish appearance, especially on the stern?

Roy;
That is possible. I am sending to PTHQ for some more 8x10's of RON 40 boats and crew, especially PT 599(one of my subjects).
Thanks.
Take care,
