Hi,

I would like to convert Italeri's 596 to 560 of RON29,
but I can't seem to find any research info. I have seen some pics by an Aussi modeler Stephen Allen who did a beautiful build. In his blurb by the pics
he states there are many views of Ron 29 boats, but my searches can't
find anything! Any suggestions, anyone. He also has the deck in the
bow painted a buff yellow for air recognition. Is this correct?

Another question I've wondered about, on many boats the bow armament is
off center (the 20mm), wouldn't this effect the trim, or was it
counterbalanced somehow? I could understand this if it was stacked
behind another weapon. (I think I would be a little leary of serving
the front weapon, with an excited person behind me with an Oerlikon.
Even being offset would bring to much peace of mind!) But if it was the
only thing up there, why not midline?

Kurt: Don't have a picture of the 560, but I have a shot of Ron 29 boats in Corsica, and several good pics of other boats in the squadron. Send me your e-mail address......

I don't think the weight of a single 20mm mount caused any great trim problems.

Most of the "free" guns had travel-stops of one kind or another to keep them from hosing down the rest of the boat...

I've just received my packet from Al Ross on the 596 which is beautiful. In the supplemental area he mentions other possibilites for the kit. He states that 560 had mounted a 40 mm MK3 both fore and aft, with 2 50's midships. I was under ithe mpression that 560 had an Oerlikon 20mm
MK14 mounted in the fore. I hope Al is mistaken, another 40 would be rather expensive to come by. Any thoughts?

Did Dr. Ross say where he got that data that says the 560 had two 40mm, Mk. 3s? Please email me at PTConsultingNHR@aol.com (but PLEASE cc my TCONNELL@Travelers.com address) with your reply, thank you.

Kurt,

If you're going to say I said something, be accurate about what you claim I said. This is what I wrote:

"Of the Mediterranean ELCOs (PT 552-563), four boats (PT 556-559) mounted the quad 20mm THUNDERBOLT aft, while the rest appear to have mounted a 40mm MK3 aft. Interestingly, Friedman cites an OPNAV directive ordering the RON 29 boats to be completed with the following gun armament:

PT 552-555 - one 20mm MK10 aft, two twin MK17 .50 cal. mounts, one 20mm MK14 forward
PT 556-559 - one THUNDERBOLT mount aft, two twin MK17 .50 cal. mounts, one 20mm MK14 forward
PT 560-563 - one 40mm MK3 mount aft, two twin MK17 .50 cal. mounts, one 40mm MK3 forward

While I have seen photos of the first two configurations, I have not seen any photos of the third."

There is also good photographic evidence that at least some of the Ron 29 boats mounted a 37mm on the centerline forward.

My appologies. I reread my post and I guess it does sound like I was quoting you, which was not my intent. I had written the message while at work (please don't give me up) and I didn't have the supplement in front of me to give the full content. I wrote Garth offline and stated that, and that I didn't want to missinform. What I was hoping was that someone had evidence that the directive was not implemented. I will be more careful in the future.

Kurt,

Don't sweat it. So far, I haven't seen any photos that confirm that the directive was carried out. Doesn't mean it wasn't, but I just have not seen any photos that indicate that it was.

For me, one of the fun things about research is that new stuff is always showing up and driving one to look even more deeply to learn more. I've only recently discovered that the fitting of 37mm on European boats was more extensive than the generally-available photography indicated. And,
Ed's source material and personal color photos of the 490 series boats has pretty much cleared up a question I've had for years regarding the colors of the particular scheme carried by that RON.

There's always more to learn.

Al

Don't know if you have this link but it has data and photos of the Channel boats from RON35. At least 1 of the boats as 2 37mm, one mounter port and one mounted starboard.

http://members.cox.net/squadron35/index.htm

The Italeri kit's major features would be OK to make these boats without having to move turrets, etc.
