Earl Anderson was on the submarine tender, U.S.S. Canopus, when the Japanese invaded the Philippines during WW II. The Canopus was the last U.S. ship in the Asiatic Fleet left behind in the Philippines to service the remaining subs and PT boats. Earl was an ordinary Navy sailor on the Canopus in charge of obtaining and preserving the limited precious oil supply for the ship.
Earl and his crew narrowly escaped the Bataan Death March by retreating to the fortress-island of Corregidor. On Corregidor, Earl and his fellow sailors became Marines and fought the Japanese when they invaded the island. Earl and his buddies were eventually captured and spent three and a half years in Japanese P.O.W. camps.
Earl has just published a book about his true life adventures with the help of his great-nephew, Shawn Davis. The book, Never Surrender, is available on Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, and Borders.com. Just type in Never Surrender or Earl Anderson and the book will pop up on the site. This book is a must for anyone interested in WW II sub tenders and PT boats!
