EARL WAS NICE ENOUGH TO LET ME SCAN SOME PHOTOS IN HIS SCRAPBOOK, SO WE COULD SHOW YOU SOME OF THEM. ( HEY EARL, SORRY IT TOOK ME ALMOST TWO WEEKS TO DO THIS ).

I DON'T KNOW WHAT SOME OF THESE THINGS ARE IN THIS SHOT, BUT IT IS THE 108 BOAT ON PATROL.

Could, MAYBE the top photo be of a mount for a machine gun, or twin machine guns with containers for ammo boxes .....................?

*THANK YOU EARL!*

*THAT SHOT OF THE TORPEDO LAUNCH IS REALLY AWESOME AND SHOWS THE RETAINING CABLES REALLY WELL.*

*THE PHOTO OF THE BASE CREATES ALL SORTS OF POSSIBLE DIORAMAS.*

Cheers

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing them!

The top photo is interesting with the roll off's and the original tube mountings still in place. Earl, did you ever remove those original mountings or did you just leave them there?

Yes, that's a twin .50 mount. Great shot of the mount for the gun and the base.

That looks like it could be a big fuel bladder. Earl, did you use fuel bladders for long distance runs? Or is that something entirely different?

thanks so much steve.great photos.
i don,t kmnow if the "m,ounts and/or fuel bladders were prior to my comimg aboard tjhe 108 or after i left it.i thinks they were beofore. someone m,emntioned there was a thirty mm gun in thios area so it may havve been for that gun
the base photo showes the hotel at th end of the pier tjhat was used for hdqtrs for officers quarters and vanderbilts offices and qyarters.the ron 12 boats were lined up along yttje ppier.
tje firsy street on left where the first tents are was wjhere laundry girls took in the laubdry from the guys.there were usually about 10 girls there.they took the clothing to a river ast the left of the base/it had cement steps/thyey soaked the clothing in the river and uSed wooden paddles on the steps to beat out thedurt and smells. don,t remember if they used soap or not. aa bridge crossed the river to a small village at tjhe left of the base.at tjhe end og the forreground street was a bombed out chursh and then our galley.my termnt was just across the roasd from the galley.beging tjhe galley was where a lot of bombs were stacked.
to the left behing the hotel was where the villAge started.there was one t ttent tjhe phillp guierrillas used for a holding aarea foer enemy and also a phillip girl was held there on just a cot.she was executed the next day for collaboratibng with ebnemy.
some nights phill guerls wound drrive by and throw grenades towards our area.they did not like uus as we had contact with their women.i was lucky in that i had a boy to keep my teent clean annd his sioster did my 2wash.she and her family ionvited me to dinner one day.it was very interesting.
the base crews and the boat crrews did not intermingle very much as they were out on patrol most of the time and we were kept busy on the base.
there was a hand cranked old victrola insiode the church that comntimuously played jho stadffors songs,. thintk that was the only recorsd they had.
tjere was a jap ship over on its sider in the bay that was kleft over from the ormoc bay bAttlwe.a lot of guys tried to swimm down into it for souvineers but the air inside was too rank and foul .there were also giant man o war sea nettles to watch out for and they had kill;ed some with their opoisinous temntaccles.
thanks again steve you diod a good job. see you next time earl;
