Are they, also, the same sets which were used in PT-109?
And, are those sets in storage anywhere?

Garth;
I doubt it, In Harm's Way, was filmed almost entirely at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor. All exterior shots were at Pearl, including ships. USS Saint Paul (CA 73) in the role of the straw bottom cruiser (referred to only as the "old swayback"), and an accompanying destroyer, USS Philip (DD-498), that took on the role USS Cassidy were extensively filmed on. Other US Navy ships that participated include destroyers USS Braine (DD 630), USS O'Bannon (DD 450), USS Renshaw (DD 499), USS Walker (DD 517), submarine USS Capitaine (SS 336) and the attack transport USS Renville (APA 227). All of the destroyers had to have their modern (1960s) ASW gear covered over with fake gun-mounts or deck houses. Also used were a few 1950s vintage 63 ft USCG ASR launches that were made over to resemble Elco 80 ft torpedo boats, as the few that existed were not available for use.
The Garden Party, was filmed using REAL active duty officers and wives/girlfriends, that were based at Pearl.
Take care,

I wish I could post photos, I'd show you the ones I'm referring to, Ted. They were from scenes from late in the movie - when Rock's son's PT attacked the main Japanese force and got destroyed.
The scenes were definitely filmed on a sound stage ...
Thanks anyway. |

Garth;
Yes those close ups were, filmed on sound stage, with a partial boat. They also used models for this sequence. These are not considered "Exteriors" in the fake world of hollywood. As with many "in the water" movies that were filmed, they built a "tank" in one of the parking lots and filmed that way. As was some shots on Gilligans Island. The pierside shots were Ford Island.

Right. Correct, Ted ... I was referring to the "partial boat" ... was that the same one that was used in PT-109? Would you know if that set is in storage anywhere? |

No, it was not the same. The photos of both movies show this.Yhe In Harms way boat "set" is extremely basic. The PT 109 is more detailed and closer to the real McCoy.

OK, I just have to ask...
WHAT "Dick's ''In Harm's Way" photos"?
Don't remember seeing them...certainly not on a recent thread.
Am I imagining...or forgetting...something?

OK Al, see it now...thanks.
The last couple close-up shots of the mock-up cockpits sure look similar to the ones in "They Were Expendable"...
