Dave, Knights of the Sea was a hardcover book that was put out by PT BOATS INC., back in 1982. I call it my bible, as it lists hundreds of PT BOAT VETS, including a bio on each man listed and their photo. Contents include photos,PT Boat Nicknames, a list of all squadrons, some maps, color photos, color shots of squadron decals, British boats and bio's, all Tender photos and histories, and short stories. Mine was donated by PT BOATER, William Klaus, Ron 16, back on December 7, 1998. I wouldn't part with this book for all the money in China..........

David . . .

The Knights of the Sea Book was published back in 1982 and had a very heavy hard bound cover with a silver embossment. The book has just over 500 pages printed mainly in black and white with a few color pages in the front. The book is divided into sections:
Dedication
Introduction
Section 1 - Patches,Boats,Bases,Tenders,Training, page 9
Section 2 - P.T. Boats Inc-The Organization, page 69
Section 3 - Sea Stories, page 93
Section 4 - US P.T. Boaters, Then and Now (short Bio's), page 139
Section 5 - With Our Allie, Their histories and Tales, page 431
Section 6 - Biographies of Allies, Other Friends and Supporters, page 459
Section 7 - Ron Composition, PT Losses, PT Nicknames, KIA, Members, Glossary and Charts, Page 473

I bought my copy in 1999 from a used book dealer for $175.00 in excellent condition, however I was never able to find one that had been numbered. I had searched for a couple of years seeing a few on eBay at time going for $300 to $400 dollars and were numbered, although I bided on them they just simply ran above my price range. Fortunately back then, most of the used book dealers weren't selling yet on eBay and was able to purchase the one I have at a fairly reasonable price. Sadly it is no longer in excellent condition - see photos below!

Occasionally the book was mentioned or talked about on this message board and sellers on eBay selling the book for well over $300. So I decided in 2009 to sacrifice my book and scan, ocr, reassemble as a book, generate a searchable PDF and record it to CD disks and donate it to HQ to sell for operational fundraising, suggesting they sell it for $65.00.

At first I tried to scan the book as a whole, but the text margins were to close to the inside gutter resulting in the text being cut-off. Next I built a scanning frame and glass plate and planned to used a digital camera to shoot each page as the book was pressed tightly in the glass frame. Although a little better results, it still wasn't good enough to republish.

After those attempts failed, I was forced to dismantle the book, cutting off the bound cover, slicing each 16-page signature away from the wax and Smith sewn stitched inner binding, then cut apart each signature into individual pages. As I did this, my wife, Mary Ann likes to joke "she could hear me bawling throughout the whole procedure", Although I seriously doubt it! However, I did go thru a box of tissues.

Now that it is in 500-plus pieces, maybe I should sell it page by page

Dick . . .

If you're a PT fan, you should consider buying the CD (contains a computer readable / 90% searchable Adobe "PDF" file - its not a image or movie file).

Thanks CJ Willis. I found my no. 522 on page 4 as you said. I purchased it from PT Boat,
Inc. when they first came out. Does anyone remember how much we paid for it?

Dick

Your a better man than I am. I would have cried myself if I had to cut up that book. I guess you made the supreme sacrifice for all those that want to get a cheaper version of the book. I should get one myself, so I don't have to keep opening and closing the book for research. It would be much easier for sure. Thanks Dick, you do so much for this message board, and cutting up your book just proves my point...............

Dick! Wow all I can say is you are the most dedicated ever! I got mine a few years ago, I never noticed the number on Pg 4 until today. I have #1918. Pretty cool. I think I will buy one of your copies on disc just to be a good sport! Also to help the memory of the perfectly good book you so ruthlessly destroyed! Jerry PT658 Portland

Wow Dick, You realy do take the cake on this one the time and effort to break the book down and then scan it is huge.

One can only say thankyou for all the effort to produce the CD for us to enjoy .

Not to take anything away from you but did PT Boats ever think of doing a reprint or as with everything now would cost be a factor.
