Gents;
Search You Tube for : NAVY LOG -1958 - PT 109 - John Baer as John F. Kennedy - first version of this story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DQO9l7CjqI
The boat that is used for this show believe it or not, sure looks like the Higgins prototype boat PT 70(YP-107)!!!! It also is carrying a later post war Radar mast, as seen on PT 809!
Take care,
TED

Hi Ted,
The video shot of the HIGGINS boat looks like it was filmed off the west coast? It also reminded me of this photo taken at Port Huyneme CA in Nov 1949 of PT658 PT659 and PT660 renamed as RCT-13,14 and 15. I wonder where they filmed this Navy Log series? If it was in the Los Angeles area, I wonder how likely it is that it was one of these 3 boats? Look at their radar masts and IFF aerials are extremely similar. The video shows the same windshield modification too. Very interesting possibilities! Jerry

Interesting, thanks Ted.
Cool photo Jerry. What are those devices fore and aft on RCT 14?

Jerry;
That is a possibility, but look at the starboard side shots of the boat underway, to me the superstructure appears to be longer, that the 625 series PT's had.
Take care,

This is probably a boat (number unknown at present) out of Port Hueneme configured as a cargo boat to supply the 669th AC&W squadron (USAF) on Santa Rosa Island. Pics supplied by Chip Marshall.

Thanks Al and Frank and Ted! I have also seen these pictures before and agree. However, one interesting tidbit is that the photo I posted was from Nov 1949 and the other ones are from 1956-1959. Is it possible (and I daresay highly likely!) that the photo Al posted is either the PT658 PT659 or PT660? The Navy is constantly modifying its boats so this would not be unheard of to remove the gun tubs and install bench seating for passengers as shown n the photo. Tell me what other Higgins PT Boats were even in the general area at the time? I also found a little bit of info about the TV series "Navy Log" was filmed for 3 seasons, beginning on CBS in 1955 and moved to NBC for the last two years of production. I just cant find where the series did most of its filming?
Jeff to answer your question, the structures on the RCT14 are Radar Reflectors so the boat could pull targets for shooting Navy Aircraft missiles at. Did you also notice the mast full of cameras for recording the missile hits? Pretty cool. Thanks all you guys for your input on this! I think the boat shown in the movie is PT658. Jerry

The boat in the color photos is RCT15 (ex PT660).
Same boat, later, fitted as a SEPTAR. I have a very poor shot of her buring after being hit by a missile.

According to imdb.com, oddly enough, it says the series was filmed at "Iverson Ranch - 1 Iverson Lane, Chatsworth, Los Angeles, California." It also lists about every cast member for the run of the series...some very familiar names mixed in there.
