August 1, 1916 - January 14, 2013

With great sadness I report that the Sam Reynolds, XO and later Skipper of, the PT-162 of RON-9 passed away last night (January 14, 2013). Sam is survived by his two daughters and his wife Mary.

Sam had been hospitalized for a number of issues and had been bedridden in hospitals and rehab centers since August of 2012. He went home few days ago and was surrounded by his family, at his home in Fairhope, AL, at the time of his passing.

Of historical note, Sam was Exec Officer (XO) of PT-162 on August 1, 1943 while on patrol with PTs 159, 157 and 109. The 162 and 109 became separated from the 159 and 157 that evening which was was a moonless night and on such nights in the Solomons a sailor could not see his hand in front of his face. The 162 was the closest PT to the 109 the night it was hit by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri and searched and reported no survivors. Such was the beginning of the 109 saga.

Sam appreciated very much the Christmas cards a bunch you fellas sent when I posted his plight. He intended to send each a personal note of thanks for cheering him up when he got home. He never got the chance but please consider this his thanks to each of you, now delivered!

Sam's mind was sharp as a tack right to the end. I've been calling him every couple of days since September and he could pick up right where we left off. I hope my mind can do that at some 96+ years of age!

Services for Sam will be on Saturday near home. He donated his body to medical science. Sam's niece, Sydney Walter, did not request, nor expect, us to send anything to Sam's family. However, I can give you Sam's address and you can send anything to Sam's wife, Mary, if you wish.

Thank you for sending this News Bridge. I had the pleasure of talking with Sam several times over the years, and met him at the last reunion in Rhode Island. A great guy that I am sure will be missed. A few years ago, we had a three way phone conversation with Sam, myself, and PT-162 crewmen Larry Olgavie. It was a special time for me, as they talked about the boats, the night of the fate of PT-109, which I have a written report of this from Mr. Olgavie, and everything else. God Bless you Sam, you will once again be reunited with your Crew, dancing across the clouds on a fast boat called PT-162.

Sam;
May the waves rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and sea spray fall soft upon your PT 162's deck,
as you push her throttles ahead,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Fair winds and following seas Skipper....
