All,

Today, Dick posted a couple of links for free fonts. I want to post a warning here, those links mess with your IE ....

Some clarification - I've been trying to help Garth remotely.

I believe that the files linked to on the sites are safe themselves, but that the site itself might be unknowingly serving infected banner ads. Caution is warranted unless you feel you have bulletproof antivirus software - and if you're a Mac user, you can go forth and continue to be smugly overconfident and a danger to yourself. Nothing's bulletproof.

For what it's worth, I'm an IT consultant by day and spend my time implementing and maintaining both servers and workstations for small and medium clients. I'm not all-knowing on the subject, but I'm in the trenches.

I guess I'm one of the those SMUG Mac users ! ! ! !

I had no issues when visiting the site with my Mac, I then visited the site using IE on a Windows 7 computer and again had no issues or warnings. I will try them on a Windows 95 computer, but I'll have to blow off the dust and wait for hours while tries unsuccessfully to update itself, and report what was found. That is not to say there isn't any issues or dangers, I just didn't experience any! Both system have anti virus software running. Not over confident on the suit of protection software I'm using, other then the reviews are good and it is a package that is affordable.

I have removed the links out of safety, just in case. In their place I have suggested members do an internet search for themselves. There are many places where these can be found.

If you visited any of these sites, please DO A COMPLETE SCAN OF YOUR SYSTEM ! ! ! ! ! Garth and Tracy must have experienced some type of virus or attack. Always be on the safe side.

Tracy, Garth, what damage did the websites do to your computers? Did your browser alert you to a danger? Which of the two websites were infected? Did you report them to Google, Yahoo, Bing and the websites owner?

No damage to my machine, that's why I think that Garth hit some malicious banner ads; they rotate in and out and not everyone gets the same experience.

I downloaded each font zip file, scanned with antivirus, and then opened them manually to look at the file list. All they were were the windows ttf (true type font) files and a jpg image showing the fonts. I think the files themselves are safe, but the banner ad network supplying ads to that site might have some bad ads in rotation. It happens fairly regularly, unfortunately.

No need to test your old Win95 machine; I think Garth just hit a bad roll of the dice, unfortunately.

As an aside, I don't know what security you personally run on your Mac, but if you don't have some antivirus, you should get some. They're far from invulnerable any more, and apple has been doing pretty poorly at security updates.

So there is no computer damage by using the links?
Which website caused the issues?
What warnings were given?
How was the danger identified?
