Are you going to add an addendum re: the deck rim?

I think that's going to have to get covered in build reviews. I did cover the transom.

Nice work Dave, and great photos of the parts. That will be very handy to people contemplating buying the kit along with your detailed explanations.

Super nice work Dave, very helpful for those wanting to build this boat. Even with some of the minor problems, she still is a wonderful boat, and without question is the best on the market.

Great, detailed review, observations, and photos, Dave -- thanks.

The kit is sure a beauty. You've mentioned a lot of things you've seen (or haven't seen) in the kit parts. I'll add a few of my own observations and comments on what I see, repeating some of yours. I know that many, if not most of them are "nit-picky" minutia, but, I wouldn't be a PT boat buff if I didn't notice and obsess over these things.

Hopefully everyone reading this realizes I'm not running down a great effort by Italeri and all the help and work you and everyone else has put into the development, manufacture, and release of this kit.

My main thought is that, due to the extremely high cost (its unlikely that I'd purchase a second, "corrected" version, if there is to be such a thing), and with the average modeler in mind, I wish the bugs and inaccuracies had been eliminated before the release of the kit. I've already ordered mine, and its on its way. Oh, well, that's wishing for perfection, and that's nearly impossible to achieve. Here goes:

- I'd rather have seen the chines molded into the hull, not as seperately-molded add-on pieces.

- The .50's are missing the tubular-type flash suppressors present on the 109 (and a lot of the other early boats). Additional parts pieces could easily have been included.

- No life raft. Most definitely should have been included in the kit, even if we don't believe the 109 had hers.

- No unobstructed torpedo warheads for display as a boat on a combat patrol -- the screw-fitted and plate-and-wire covers are nice details, but...? Both sets of covers present a static, in-port, rear or safe-area, pre-combat or non-combat area boat -- not one with it's fish ready to fire. Same goes for no rear torpedo (vanes and propellers) detail. What's the use of open rear tube doors, if you don't show the aft-ends of the fish?

- Why not have the four training gear rods duplicated twice -- four cranked out and four not? The choices of two and two seem odd. Unless I've misunderstood, trying to bend the straight ones seems rather difficult and unneccessary, as the angles of the rods from the couplings are different between the two positions. Again, another unneccessary obstacle to modeling a boat with tubes in firing position.

- Wish they'd made a seperate seachlight piece, so it could be mounted on either the pole or the cockpit "horn" (pintle). As the kit parts stand, it's either the pole mount or nothing, if you want to include the searchlight. So many photos of PTs show the bare pole and the searchlight mounted on the "horn," or vice-versa, or both mounts empty...

- I don't quite understand your comment on the missing "slight up-angle of the last 10 feet of the stern" hull-defect.

-- I noticed the kit booklet illustration of the placement of the boat number on the forward face of the charthouse seems to incorrectly put it below the ports -- the numbers (if the 109 had them there) were centered above and between the ports.

As I said, all minutia, but...for what its worth....

You mentioned in your review that Italeri intends to correct some of these deficiencies in later versions of the kit -- any thoughts on the possiblity of purchasing corrected/additional parts spues from them in the future? That would make a lot more sense and be a lot more practical that purchasing a complete, other, "corrected" kit.

Dave means that the deck curves up a bit at the stern Drew, about right aft of the engine hatch, this Lines drawing shows it:

OK, Jeff, I see that curve on your diagram now, between the points marked as 9,860" and 10,948" -- thanks.

Drew.

I think that the separate chines are there because of limits to moulding a one piece hull AND getting it out of the mould.

Torpedos. Maybe Italeri is hoping that an after market detail set will be released if there's enough interest/demand for one. At leasr with the open rear end there is that option.

How hard is it for a modeller to change the searchlight locatuon?

We need to consider WHO Italeri designed the kit for. We also need to keep in mindthe final cost of the kit for modellers.

The flash suppresors and a raft would have been nice though.

Cheers

David and everyone else;
Great observations and great commentary. David, you should continue your narrative while building your model, sort of how cyber mike did for his PT 596 on cybermodeler.
Thaks again,
Take care,
