My dad< Chester T. Szot from Passaic, NJ and RON 36 told me once that the boats used for the movie "They were Expendable" came from his squadron.

Can anyone either confirm or deny this? If true does anyone know which boats were donated.

My faher also had the distasteful duty of burning the boats after the war.

Don't know which Ron the boats came from, but only the two used for the Ron commander's and the exec's were 80' Elco PTs -- the other four were 78' Huckins boats.

I thought I had read somewhere along the way the Huckins boats were from a training Ron in Florida...

The on-screen boats were all from Ron 4, the training squadron. The Elcos were PTs 139 and 141, the Huckins boats were PTs 99-102. It is possible that a Ron 36 PT was used as a camera boat if the squadron was at Miami Shakedown Center at the time of the filming.....

Walter;

My dad was mostly on the 525 boat. He did go out on other boats on occasion .

My dad was a very quiet guy and didn't speak much aboat the war. However he did mention seeing Douglas McArthur. I was about 7-8 yrs old when he told me this but it wasn't until later in life that I discovered that the 525 boat brought McArthur back to Correigador in his famous "I Shall Return" tour.

My father passed in 1993 but when I found his wallet the only photograph I found was his boat 525 in full gallop more than 45 years after the last time he was on it.

Walter; I tried emailing you more info but the address I have for you doesn't work.

My dad was an Electricians' Mate 2nd Class.
He went through NTSCH in Newport RI before going to MTSBTC SCH in Portsmouth, NH.

I have updated my photo folder on Yahoo for RON 36. I only have a few pics of the boats but I do have a lot of faces and also the cruise over with the Equator Party on deck of the freighter. You can see some boats lashed to the deck for the voyage over.

Send me you EMail address and I will invite you to review the site.
