Guys;
Here is a photo which I enlarged from 80' ELCO-on deck.
The subject is PT 574 RON 38, LT jg Gene Foncannon(who was Earl's Skipper on PT 108 RON 5), the photo is taken at Miami Shakedown Late March 1945. The I.D.as Foncannon as Skipper of PT 574, is from Ted Merideth's Book, page 200. Also, In the background is the Freedom Tower, which is at 600 Biscayne Blvd.
While looking at this photo (while we are all so fixated in bolt/screwholes HA HA), I noticed that the horn is on the Stbd side of the cabn here, at what boat did this modifcation occur??? Jeff only has a horn referenced up until PT 367(port side cabin 103-138/ stbrd side windscreen PT 139-196, 314-367).
Also what is the cable coming out of the forward cabin window used for?
Take care and Thanks again,
TED

A little research and bang! there is the answer! Well I just found a photo of PT 579, but on earlier 500 series boats up to 545, there is no horn in this location, so I guess it began with PT 565.
But I still don't know about the cable on the forward cabin.........Al, What is this cable exiting the forward cabin window?
Take care,

Interesting photo Ted, thanks for posting. PTs 565-624 had a number of changes like the horn you mentioned. Dick's DVD has a lot of drawings specific to these boats only. It was also a different type of horn, air powered as opposed to electric. They also moved the nav light to the top as shown in your image.

What has always fascinated me are the modifications made to the earlier boats by their crews after they got Out In The Area and figured out what really worked and what didn't.......

The drawing "Navigation Horn Installation" is ELCO_Roll_5535-5_72SCAN_00534.pdf Ted. The running light screen it is mounted to is detailed in ELCO_Roll_5535-2_72SCAN_00305.pdf. I can't guess why they went with air power, a separate compressor mounted in the chart room was needed.
