The B-17 is my all time favorite Aircraft, and very close to the PT BOATS as my Number 1 WWII passion. At one time, I had a room full of 8th Army Air Corps artifacts and uniforms. I had 2 mannequins, one dressed as a Pilot, the other as a gunner. Over the years, I have traded or sold these items to purchase PT related artifacts. I wish I never did this, but I choose to try and collect one thing, and the PT BOATS won out.

Randy;
Awesome photos!!!! I am with Frank, the 17 is the sweetest, and a favorite of mine since I was 7. On October 12, 1988, I got to live my dream, and drove to Dover AFB, in Delaware, and was toured around the B-17G 91st BG Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby 42-32076, but what was the best, was I was toured THROUGH the plane, by myself, with an old B-17G crewmember, who had volunteered during the restoration. Yu should have seen the look on his face, when I slipped into the pilots seat and reached down saying "lets start this baby up"!, he said Hey How do you know that? I told him "I have had the flight manual, since I was 15"!
The plane was supposed to fly to Wright-Patterson that day, but the winmds were too strong, she flew out the following day.

My Mom was with me that day and she took this photo of me wearing my WW ll "50 mission crush" and a G-1 USN flight jacket.

I have since sat in another B-17G's cockpit, The Liberty Belle B-17G 44-85734 in August 2009

However, on the morning of June 13, 2011, Liberty Belle made a forced landing in Oswego, Illinois, after taking off from Aurora Municipal Airport in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot of a T-6 Texan chase plane informed Liberty Belle's pilot that the B-17's inboard left wing was on fire and advised an immediate landing. The bomber landed successfully in a nearby field and the seven people aboard were able to evacuate without injury, but the fire spread and the plane was destroyed

Take care,
TED

Whenever I see a B-17 restoration project I'm reminded of my visit a couple of years ago to Wright Patterson where they were restoring the Memphis Belle. They were using a sand blaster except it used dry ice instead of sand. The amazing thing (there are several amazing things about this) was that it did no damage at all to the metal surface. The guys using it weren't even wearing respirators, although I'm not sure how smart that was.

Have fun with your project!

Dave
