Today was a very good day. While doing some research for the book, I discovered a wonderful group of photos of H7 and H8, which were the last two boats of the eight-boat contract Higgins had with the RNN. They cleared up a lot of detail questions I've had ince beginning to draw them. Looks like I have a project this weekend

These shots were apparently taken at Higgins while the boats were fitting out. Copyright is Maririme Museum Den Helder.

Al . . .

Have you noticed the similar configuration as with the early Higgins boats configuration before the change over to the more familiar style.

An interesting design, with the enclosed power turrets, very close to the Elco turrets. She is really set up for depth charges, which leads me to believe they would be used for sub chaser duty. I often wonder why very little consideration was given to protect those in the helm area of the boats, with an enclosed bridge. I know the earlier Elco boats had duplicate set ups, so that you could pilot the boat in stormy weather from below, but even the later boats offered no real protection from the elements.

Yup. They were designated "Onderzeebootjager" - in English "submarine hunter"
