Mr. Ross,

Hi again, ...

I have some photos and documents (from the West coast NARA) pertaining to what is described as a MK. 49 rocket launcher for PTs. If it'd be OK with you and Mr. Washiak, I will ask him to post what I've got here and you could tell me if the mount was the same as the MK.50 mount or a precedessor to it ...

To me, it looks identical. But, as you know, on this board, I am considered to be more wrong than I am right.

May I show them to you?

Dick is the board moderator and makes all board-related decisions., so he is the one to whom you should direct this question. I have no role in this decisiion-making process, but am sure many board members would be interested in seeing the material.

I suspect you are referring to the material that Tracy White discovered at NARA Seattle.

The photos show a launcher nearly identical in appearance to the MK50. The associated memo makes no reference to a MK49 launcher, only to a CIT (California Institute of Technology) Type 49 launcher. This suggests to me that the Navy had not yet assigned a MARK number to this design. Friedman makes no mention of a MK49 launcher in either his SMALL COMBATANTS or NAVAL WEAPONS.

Yup. Tracy specializes in camouflage and has done some heavy-duty research. It's a veritable treasure trove of primary resource information.

Garth . . .

As you well know and all others on the board, permission is not required to post photos or comment, nor do you have to ask permission from Al Ross to post photos or ask questions. If anyone has a question or comment they are free to post them without tendering permission in advance.

I will be more than happy to post the photos you have, as I do with several others on this board. Please email me the photos at your convenience and any text material you wish to have posted with the photo.

If anyone else has photos they wish to share with us all, and have not figured out how to post them (you know how we love photos, good or bad) please email them to me and I will post them.

Got an email from Tracy yesterday. He also concluded the memo didn't address a MK49 launcher.

His site http://www.researcheratlarge.com is well worth visiting for a look at some really interesting primary documentation on camouflage and other topics.

Aloha all - just registered tonight to post a response to a camouflage post.

I mainly research out of Seattle, but the Type 49 launcher document I found in the College Park NARA branch. All of my documents list the source at the bottom, in case anyone's interested in knowing where I found things. I've also got a document on Sextuple bazooka launchers developed for PTs and PCs that might be of interest, even though I don't know of any cases of them being used.
