Al;
Thanks for posting those photos of PT 589's cockpit area in the "cockpit Jump seat" post. I will do some additions as per these photos. What are the items on the top of the wind screen? the item on left and center, i know the other is the torpedo director mounting point.
Thanks again.
Take care,
TED

Now I know! The quonset hut shaped box on the left is the cover for the helmsman's sight for the MK50 rocket launchers while the post in the middle is the mount for the CO's sight for the MK50. I'd upload a photo, but I can't get into Photobucket. The photo is on page 91 of Victor's volume 1.

Hi Al and Ted,
Our webmaster, Wally, installed the Reflecting gunsight onto the PT658 back in August for the rocket launchers. We noticed that even with the dimmer switch and the 24 volt light bulb fully lit, it is very hard to make out the reflected range markings on the gunsight when it is exposed to full daylight. We think there must have been a sunshade of some type so you can see the marks better in the full sunlight. Do you have any idea how they did this back in the day? Thanks Jerry

Here are two cropped photos showing the MK1 sights on PT557 during her trip up the Hudson.
Looking at the back side, it seems to have what looks like a dark glass disc in a Y shaped mount screwed to the unit. I don't know whether this was on the original unit. Perhaps this was a mod to address the bright light problem?

Thanks Al,
That is pretty interesting, I think we will have to try it and see if that works! Hmm how do I go about making a Y shaped tinted glass plate holder.......I will have to think about this for a while! I think a machinist freind of mine may be able to help. Jerry

Just a thought. These look like WWII aircraft reflector gunsights. I did a little looking around and these might be a Mod of the MK8, which was fitted to most naval aircraft of the period. Might be worth a look if there are any restored warbirds in your area.

Al;
That is exactly what I thought as soon as I saw these photos today. They look like exactly like the sight that was on a F4U-1 Corsair. The one on the boat just has a lower housing, I suppose for protecting from elements and stablity and mounting purposes.
I think one of my boats just returned from MK 50 rocket practice!!
Thanks,
