Was a later version of this produced on the later series boats? For me I am asking for my RON 40 diorama subjects, PT 596 and PT 599. I seem to remember a round fold down mounted on the port bulkhead, that had a spring on it. I tried to search the posts but only came up with the ones on RON 9 boats and PT 127. Does anyone have this diagram/photo?
take care,
TED

Interesting that they not only had rear cockpit armor (seemingly disregarded and removed by so many skippers, to judge by the posts on the Message Board) on this late-war boat, but also had a little swinging door on it, to shut off the cockpit...

Isn't it a bit of a wifes tale about many, many skippers removing the armor on their boats ? ? ? ? ?

Hadly,

I personally think so (to any large degree), but of course there's veteran-related accounts and photographic evidence of some doing so.

Ted,

Somewhere on the old posts on the Message Board there's a couple of photos of, I believe, PT 127's cockpit, showing a fold-down seat on the port inboard cockpit bulkhead.

I sent Ted, via an E mail a couple shots of the drop down seat. Maybe he would be so kind as to post them.

Drew;
Thanks., I have seen the PT 127 photo, but for some reason I remember seeing a "Jump seat" somewhere, I am begining to believe it was on a Higgins diagram, (Maybe 450 or 625 series-larger cabin)the seat I am thinking of was round, but similar to the ones I am posting below. These are Panzer seats but same general idea.

Open position.

Closed/folded position.

Al;
Thanks for posting those photos of PT 589's cockpit area. I will do some additions as per these photos. What are the items on the top of the wind screen? the item on left and center, i know the other is the torpedo director mounting point.

Drew and Hadley;
Funny you should mention the armor plate being removed. While I was looking for this seat in the older posts, I noticed Nats photos of RON 9 boats on White Plains, if you look at the enlarged photos, all of the boats with stern to the camera, have the armor plates removed. Also I came across a photo of Alfred vanderbilt at the wheel of PT 196 in New Guinea and the plate is gone. Also the other photos that comes to mind is of PT 131.

Ted,

Yep, I have seen a lot of photos like the ones you posted where that rear armor bulkhead and "wing" piece was removed, so I should probably amend my statement. But, I've also seen a lot of others in which the armor was intact, either the whole setup or just the bulkhead itself (with the wing piece to starboard removed).

I remember reading that in at least some cases it was for more freedom of movement in the cockpit area and a desire by some skippers, for the sake of morale, not to be the only ones shielded from incoming fire.
