Was there a common type of cam-stop used to control the firing arcs of weapons such as bow-mounted 20mm & 37mm guns turret or free-mounted MGs? Is this related to locus cams?

On reel 3, frame 120 shows a limiting stop for the MK14 mount. It only lists the Soviet boats, but might apply to the port forward mounts on US boats, too. It doesn't limit traverse, but seems to affect the elevation of the weapon like the pipe rails did.

Thanks, Al.

I've always thought those free-swinging guns must have posed a real hazard on barge runs, what with the dark, the movement of the boat and everyone shooting at once...

Hi Will and Al,
I found a cam operated gun deflector mount drawing used on Higgins boats. The drawing is labeled "20 MM Machine gun deflector assembly--details of High Trunion Mount." It is Higgins drawing number 2602-17C (Buships Drawing 603328) on the Louisiana Digital Library. http://www.louisianadigitallibrary.org/ It is meant for PT462-PT485. Maybe this is what you were thinking of? Jerry

Will . . .

Below are some drawings from the Microfilm collection. These drawings show the 20mm Limiting Stop assembly used on the forward and aft gun mounts. There are several different drawings based on dates, where I believe the elevation contour changed based on boat details. This one shows a single ban with bolt-on brackets, later styled Limit Stop rings were split in two halves, with two screws to screw the halves together. This might have been done to make repaires or retrofit updates much easier in the field.

Below is just a sample of the Elco version I marked up:
