Here is an interesting photo I came across this photo on Ebay last week. It is a photo of CWO4(Bosun) Alfred Gwynn Vanderbilt ll and actress Paulette Goddard at his 30th birthday party in Baltimore MD Sept 28, 1942. I always thought he came in as a reserve Ensign just like all the other PT Officers, but here is proof. I wonder With his previous membership at the NYC Yatch club, if he was in the New York State Naval Militia before the start of the war? I know he was a key reason why the RON 12 Commissioning took place at the NYC Yatch Club.
Just today I came across a photo of him as a LT jg, at the wheel of PT 196 RON 12 in New Guinea, The background looks like maybe Morobe Take care,

P.S. His brother LT.jg George Wastington Vanderbilt lll, was the Intelligence Officer for RON 12. They also had an older half bother William Henry Vanderbilt III, who was in the Rhode Island senate and was Governor of Rhode Island.from 1939-1941. He entered the Navy and was in World War I and World War II and later retired as a Captain USNR

Earl;
Good to hear from you! I hope all is well and you are now able to head to the VFW once in a while.for a beer.

Did you stay with PT 108 when she was transferred from RON 5, to RON 10 on February 15, 1945? Or were you at Ormoc as Base Force?

Thanks for the info on Afred Vanderbilt, There is not much written on Ormoc as a base it self. But it was very active, as the area was full of targets. I am sure I will find more in the website I found with the war diaries. I am sure by 28 October1944(the date RON 12 and RON 7 began operations from Ormoc, RON 25 came in and relieved them in 21 Feb 1945) he was in a higher postion within RON 12. Maybe Alfred was RON 12 Executive Officer by then, or maybe on staff with COMMTBRONS 7th Flt.
Ormoc is rougly 160 miles by boat from Base 17 Bobon Point, Samar Island, and directly across Leyte Island from Tacloban(40 miles drive in a jeep, but, roughly 120 miles by boat at its shortest route). Did Base 17 administratively encompass Ormoc, Tacloban, and Bobon Point? I thought Base 17 was only Bobon Point. Anyway
Take care,
TED

P.S. Earl here are the Officers in operation command of Ormoc PT's :
Lt. Weston C. Pullen, Jr., USNR, Commander Squadron 12, Dec. 28, 1944 to Mar. 7, 1945.
Lt. Comdr. Theodore R. Stansbury, USNR, Commander Squadron 25, Mar. 7 to May 4, 1945.
Lt. John J. McGlynn, USNR, Commander Squadron 12, May 4 to July 25, 1945.
