Hello,
First question, is a PT Boat the same as a Torpedo Squadron? My father passed away years ago and I recently obtained a copy of his Notice of Separation from the Navy, which notes his service in both 59 & 100 torpedo squadrons. Im attempting to learn as much as I can for my family, as my father would never speak of the war.
If anyone can offer any help, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you.

Dawn,
He might have served in a Navy Air service. Torpedo Bombers based on Aircraft Carrier were divided into Torpedo Squadrons. In the PT boat services there were (MTB's) Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons or better known as RON's.

Dawn, there were no PT Boat Squadrons with those numbers. There was a PT 59, which served with Squadron 2, and PT-100 was with Squadron 14 and Squadron 4, which was the training Squadron
at the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons Training Center in Rhode Island.

If the torpedo sqaudrons were referred to as VT-59 and VT-100 your father was definately a Naval Airman.

Thank you everyone!
My father's Notice of Separation identifies:
Torpedo Squadron 59
Torpedo Squadron 100
It also identifies Composite Squadron 8
I know he was on the Intrepid at some point and he was a navigator on a plane; however I dont really know more than that, except that his plane went down on Iwo Jima; however he survived.
This is all foreign to me, so I greatly appreciate anyone's help.
Thank you :O)

I am having a tough time finding these Torpedo Squadrons, unless I am looking in the wrong places. I do know that VT stands for Torpedo Squadron. I know that the Navy used the TBF- Avenger torpedo bomber that flew off of the intrepid. The plane had a three man crew, the Pilot, and Radio Operator/gunner and a ball turret gunner. I am sure someone can locate these Squadrons for more information. I tried to look it up on the web, but no luck.......................

Dawn,
From what I've seen, seperation papers were not the most accurate descriptions of one's service.
that said, I found that VT-100 was a replacement torpedo squadron. Replacement squadrons acted as pools from which deplyed squadrons drew to fill vacancies. The commander in 1945 was Lt Cdr JJ Maechtlen.
From what I can find, There was no VT-59. There was a Carrier Service Squadron(F) 59 (CASU[F] that was commanded by Lt Cdr C.H.Adams.
If your father deployed on Intrepid, Check with the Intrepid Museum..
Two other possibilities might be the U S Naval History and Heritage Command, and The Naval History Foundation.
Good Luck
