Frank,

BTW, I FINALLY borrowed a cassette player so now I can play the tapes you sent. The tape sounds fine but when I try and capture it on my PC it suffers sound degradation so I'm working through that.

Speaking of the 109 rescue....Your tapes did reveal something that Lieb said once a long time ago before I started taking notes. There was an AP correspondence on the 157 the night of the 109 rescue and his name was Leif Erickson. Lieb remembers him because of the obvious catchy name. Reading through some bio info on Lief, I found he was also with Frank Hewlett (UP Correspondent) on the 157. Lieb siad he thought that Lief was with someone so now we know who it was.

Why there was an AP and UP correspondent on the 157 isn't known. Had the story of the loss of the Ambassador's son really pull that much attention or did they just happen to be traveling in the area. Still reading to see if there is an answer for that.

Frank: On Patrol most of our crew including officers always wore long pants and long sleeved shirts because it would get cool early in the mornings especially if it rained and it rained a lot. Also long pants in my 50 gun turret was a must because if you fired the guns the hulls were hot. When not on patrol on the boat we all wore Navy issue white skivvy undershorts and no shirts. They were the coolest and we slept in them. (On page 223 of "At Close Quarters" is a picture of some of our crew in skivvies). I recall at Green Island.after the base grew bigger - Orders came out from the Base that we could no longer wear skivvies to the chow hall. Our bunch was pretty "P.O.ed" with that order we liked comfort.

C.J., thanks so much for this update. It is important to know what crews wore while out on patrol, as I have heard many different views from those who were there. It has been decided that the mannequin I have will be wearing long sleeve shirt and long pants. Thanks to everyone who helped with this question.................
