One of the items I will be using in my John F Kennedy Experience Exhibit in January, will be a Mannequin dressed like JFK. I want to be sure of what he might have been wearing the night he went into the water. I really do not know if he had on shorts or pants that night, although I am leaning towards the standard Kaki pants.

1. Kaki Shirt
2. Kaki Pants
3. Boondockers
4. green army.marine hat
5. web belt with knife and .45

What do you guys think for the Exhibit. I am open to suggestions here.....................

Didn't JFK have a .38 pistol at the time of the sinking of PT-109?

Cheers

Your right, but I have the 45 Holster and the replica 45, so I will use them, which are attached to a web belt. By the way the belt and 45 were donated by Wallace McNeish, who was on PT-374. I would have to buy the 38 Holster and try and find a replica 38...............

Frank,

According to author Robert J. Donovan in "PT 109 - John F. Kennedy in World War II," JFK carried a Smith & Wesson .38 revolver (issued to him, along with a sheath knife, on the Navy transport U.S.S. Rochambeau), most probably a Victory Model, and carried (again, most probably) in an open holster with a strap that crossed over in front of the revolver's hammer and snap-buttoned to the holster.

According to Donovan, there was a lanyard on the .38's oval ring on the butt of the gun. JFK hung the .38 around his neck by this lanyard on his night time swims in Blackett Straight.

I would think the holster was most probably carried by JFK on a standard U.S. web pistol belt, either slipped on through the holster's belt loop, or hung from the pistol belt's grommets by a standard military equipment wire hook, slipped onto the holster's belt loop.

As far as his dress, I would have thought he'd have been wearing standard officer's khakis -- long sleeved shirt and pants -- and boondockers on patrol, but a lot, if not all, of the swimming he did during the survival ordeal, he did in his white skivvy shorts.

Thanks Drew, I just read the book this afternoon and answered my own questions. Still, I am spending enough to get this Exhibit up and running, so I just don't need the added expense of the .38 and holster. I will use long officers pants and shirt, which I have. Will use my WWII sun glasses and one of the original PT-60 green hat that i have.

Frank,

Liebenow doesn't recall what LT. JFK had on that night (too busy driving the boat and looking not to get 'found' I suppose).

I had not realized that although the 171 went out with the 157, it only did a radar sweep and left the area to go on it regular patrol so the 157 was by all itself through the in and out of the rescue itself. Should anything have happened, such as being seen by the Japanese, they were on their own.

P.S. Lieb also just told me that the daughter (Martha) of the pharmacist's mate (Fred Ratchford) who was on-board the night of the rescue of the 109 crew is visiting him this coming Wednesday. She is also visiting Welford West, Liebenow's torpedoman, the day before (that's tomorrow). Martha herself, is a retired Naval Commander!

P.S.S.Frank, Liebenow remembers you!

Thanks for the information. Bud and I first met in 1993, at Battleship Cove. He was so nice. I did an interview with him back when things were on VHS Tape. I lent the tape to one of Gerard Zinser's daughters, who in turn never sent the tape back to this day. It was something I never forgot, we kept in touch over the years through letters. I did send him a letter a few months ago.....................
