Hi all,
I just received my set of Snyder & Short USN paint chips. I was interested to see how my photo of PT-505 compared to them. Interestingly enough it's a very close match to 5B Thayer Blue. It also looks like the deck is painted the same color. However the engine cover not including the vent and hatch look like 20B Deck Blue.

Here's the boat as she appears at time time I'm modeling her. I don't have permission to image the paint chip but trust me, it's almost a perfect match.

What do you think? Am I seeing things?

David, just a thought. The color that is apparent on the boat "could" be a reflection of the water on a light grey hull. Some of the other top side structures of the boat do not "seem" to reflect the very lt. blue color. because of maybe, the camera angle. Interesting and one of the many issues keeping us doing the research.

I think the deck is 20B, as well. Take a look at the cropped image. The sun is shining down from the starboard side. Note that the deck edge is darker than the sheer strake below it. If the deck edge was 5B, at this sun angle, the sheer strake would be darker, as it is in the deck edge's shadow; it's lighter, even with the shadow. Also, note that the tone of the deck under the ready service locker has a different reflectance than the side of the locker. Again, at that sun angle, I would expect the deck to have the same tonal value as the locker side. Same goes for the engine room hatch and the vent/access hatch. The tops of the ready service lockers look darker than the box. The roof of the day cabin does appear to be the same color as the sides, however. Something to consider...

Looking at pictures of nested boats of the same squadron might help, although admitedly there is a lot more shadow and a lot less reflected sunlight...

I'm having a hard time giving up on the Thayer Blue, although it doesn't make sense from the references I have. You guys have me convinced we're looking at 20B (or at a minimum some darker color) in more areas than just the engine compartment cover.

Look at the tops of ready service lockers, and trim too. I think these photos of her sister ship, PT-504, add some clues. Take a look...

Notice the tops of the ready service lockers on the 504. They are darker. But Al, I think you're right about the top of the day cabin and the chart house as shown in the next photo.

Notice the tops of the gun tubs. Look at the grab handles on the side of the gun tub. It also looks like 20B.

Here's a deck shot of PT-504. If you look at the deck and the darker features it appears the deck is 20B

Okay, I'm back from the edge. Thanks for pointing these issues out. I'm getting closer to paint! Now I'm hoping that Hawk Graphics can come through with some numbers for me.

Thanks gents!
Dave

PS. Yes, I'm still working on the 105 boat.

Dvid,

One needs to be a bit careful with photographs, as Al infers the lighting can create some tricks in photos. Color film at this time is unreliable, with a tendency to fade over time. The verticle curfaces of these boats where Thayer blue, decks would be 20B. I see a shade difference between the horizontal and verticle surfaces.

Boats in tne ETO followed the navy standard measures, unlike the Pacific. You can be fairly sure that there was little deviation from the call out of 20B for the decks.

Hi Bill,
I agree and that's why I continue to come back here and ask these questions, sometimes more than once. I appreciate the knowledge and experience I get here. I think it helps me make better and more accurate models.

I'll post some progress pictures shortly.

Hi guys,
I thought I would share this paint test with you. Attached is the subject boat and I sprayed some of the paint directly on to the photo. I numbered 1-4 and here's what those mean.

1. Thayer Blue scaled with 20% white paint
2. Thayer Blue full not scaled.
3. Thayer Blue with 50% 5H
4. 5H scaled with 20% white paint

The white paint is added to bring the paint into scale. In some colors like red you would use light gray otherwise you would get pink. The light gray scales the paint to it's size.

Anyway Thayer Blue is the closest match to the subject photo so that's what I'm going to go with. I get the possibility of color shifting on the photo. But the color is so close I have to assume it is correct.
