Hi guys,
I'm working on a mini diorama of PT-505 being towed to safety after she was struck by a mine prior to the Normandy Invasion. I have a couple of pictures of PT-503, 504, and 505 as reference. PT-505 seems to have two 20mm on the fore deck instead of the one found on 503 and 504. At some point she had another gun mounted on the bow. 40mm on the stern with two torpedo's and depth charges.

Anyway, I have two questions.
1. The 505 had 3 portable pumps in use to remove water from her engine compartment. For you former sailors where do you suppose these would have been placed during this operations.

2. Does anyone have any more photographs out there of these English Channel boats? I have a few in darker colors than what you see in this picture. Just wondering if there's anything else out there?

Dave

Sister ships but in darker colors?

David;
Go back to the thread:PT 505 Last known surviving member

Ask Denny if Mr. Frank remembers actual location of portable pumps.
in that thread, you will also see the Don Millman photo that I re-posted
PT 505 underway at Full Throttle 1944, PT 505 has a third MK 14 mount forward.

Are you asking, where the portable pumps would be postioned during dewatering? Or where would they be stowed while underway in normal conditions?
Take care,
TED

Hi Ted,
Both me and my friend Jerry have tried to reach Denny without success. We are also not sure of Mr. Frank's status at the VA hospital. Hopefully we'll find Denny and get an update.

I was interested in where the pumps would be located during dewatering. If you have any thoughts about that I would appreciate hearing them.

I'm familiar with the photo you described and it was helpful in determining the location of the 20mm mounts on the foredeck. It looks like the smoke generator was lost or removed from this boat. There seems to be a barrel rest for the 40mm on the stern.

David;
It looks like the smoke generator may have been jettisoned, it appears the positioning blocks are still bettween the legs of the 40mm barrel hold.

As for the pumps; One would be placed on 505's deck and would be positioned as close to the space to be dewatered(It looks like two guys are standing STBD aft, near lazerrette), I don't think much has changed, over the years. 2" line with strainer into space (just like larger black fire hoses on sides of fire trucks), for this craft and deck height 2-3 lengths, then the pump on deck, then discharge lengths out other side of pump and overboard. The damage looking at color photo, occurred between frame 54-69, strbd side towards centerline.
As we spoke about before, some hose lengths appear to be on landing craft along side, as this appears to be a salvage craft, she would bring her own pumps which would require extra lengths of hose from her to reach 505's engineroom and lazerette, as her pumps would remain on her deck
Take care,
TED
