hi,

last february i visited leyte and samar in the philippines with the hope of finding some of the locations my father, gm/1c 127 boat, had been during the war.

as one might imagine there is very little of anything left after 75 years and the jungle. but, i did have a couple surprises. i've posted a few of the pics, then and now, on the 127 website:

http://www.pt127.org/2012PhilTrip.html

thanks to those on the board who provided information prior to my trip and especially to CJ Willis and Warren Trosclair who took time to help.

Mark;
Great photos, however, as you mentioned 68-71 years of growth and development is bound to change things. I frequently go to Toboga, Panama and there is not much left there, now. When I first went there in 1992, the Marine railway was still there and being used by the fisherman, the anchor blocks for mooring bouys were are there, The refueling facility is still in used, and has grown. In 1992, I stayed in the beachfront hotel with my wife, that was "The Officers Club", and ate in its resturant, which serveed as their mess in 1942-45. but now(as of June 2011) it has been demolished, all that is left is the concrete pad and wall that was the patio.
Actually, of all the bases in ETO, PTO, and MTO, Bastia Corsica (RON 15, 22 and 29) is the only base that has really has remained unchanged, mainly because most of there buildings were already there for probably 100 years before the war and were "Appropriated" as needed( ex: PT H.Q. was a waterfront Apt/boarding house and waterfront engine shop was originally a shed used to store fishing nets and related boat equiptment).
Other than that, Portsmouth, England (I was last there in 2005)is the closest to original, but here too in recent years, buildings have been replaced and others modernized.by the Royal Navy.
Take care,
TED
