I am starting a MBH model Higgens. Did the planking change on the later war boats? In David Doyles book I noticed the hull planking on the 309 boat is diagonal and the planking on the 658 its horizontal it also has plywood decks.
Thanks George

Based on Higgins drawing 587103, it appears that the fore and aft outer planking began with the 625 series - GENERAL NOTE: INNER PLANKING ON DECK, SIDES, BOTTOM, & TRANSOM RUNS DIAGONALLY. OUTER PLANKING ON DECK, SIDES, & BOTTOM RUNS FWD. & AFT; ON TRANSOM RUNS ATHWARTSHIPS.

Hi George,
The PT658 originally had a planked deck, but it was so rotten that it had to be replaced. The vets chose tp replace it with marine grade 13 layer 18mm mahogany plywood "Edensaw" I think, which was liberally soaked with Smith Systems Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealant.. It will last much longer than the original planks. The planks ran fore and aft, and were diagonal on the inside, with a layer of canvas between the inside layer and the top layer of 1/2 inch mahogany deck planks. I hope this is helpful. Jerry PT658

I hope this gives you an idea of the two layers of decking. This is a photo I took ten days ago while installing the decking on the 305.
