I just heard the sad News myself. As a young Kid who was getting so involved with PT BOATS, I loved watching McHales Navy, and will never forget these shows. A great actor has passed........

Very Sad News,
He was one of my favourite actors.
As a young fella i loved McHales Navy,i somehow felt an affinity with the Boats.
I didnt know why,and as you all know it was only much later on i found out about my Grandfather service on the Bases.
Not only was Ernest Borgnine a fine actor he was also one of the Good Guys,may he rest in peace.

All;
Ernest Borgnine never forgot his roots, he always attributed his successes in life to the 10 years he spent in the Navy. I also know he was invited to several PT Boat reunions, and I know he did go to one of them, i believe in the 1980's. to honor his life long support for the Navy, he was asked to go to Washington and the following message was released on 18 Oct 2004:
"Ernest Borgnine makes chief. Academy Award winning actor Ernest Borgnine, who served in the Navy for 10 years, received honorary rank of "chief petty officer" while in Washington, D.C. In the Navy, Borgnine was a gunner's mate 1st Class but he dreamed of "making chief." Borgnine received the rank from Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Terry D. Scott -- the Navy's highest ranking sailor -- for Borgnine's support of the Navy and Navy families worldwide."

Thank you for all the hours of joy and laughter you gave this PT BOAT enthusiast. Enjoy your final Patrol and Rest in Peace Chief Gunners Mate Ernest E. Borgnine, USN

I've always been a large fan of Ernest Borgnine as an actor and that admiration only increased after I learned about his military service. By all reports, he was the real deal, a good and decent man who, in spite of the fame and fortune he ultimately obtained, managed to stay grounded and not "go Hollywood".
Like others of this man's generation who either served before their acting breakthroughs, like Edward Albert and Lee Marvin, or even after they had hit it big, like Jimmy Stewart, their passing needs to be noted and mourned and due credit given for the service and sacrifice they gave to the country.
RIP, Mr. Borgnine, and thank you for not only all the great performances you gave us, but also for your service and sacrifice to us, your countrymen.
