My dad (Fred J Vollmer) served on PT Boat 288 off the coast of the Philippines before and up to VJ Day. Is there anyone out there that served on his boat and has any information that they might have in their possession that they came provide to me for my informational records that I have on my dad.

My dad supposedly was either a former member or Preseident of the PT Boat Association. He was a radio operator on PT Boat 288. He was my dad and my mentor.

Unfortunately, I lost my dad to a short battle with Colon Cancer in 2008 and would like to know anything and everything that I can find out about his service in the U.S. Navy.

Respectfully,
His Son, Paul J. Vollmer

Yes, I see that Frank J. is in 'Knights', a CMoMM in Ron 17.

Thanks for all your replies. I had a Frank Vollmer as my uncle (my dad's older brother). He passed away many years ago, and although I still pray for his soul daily, I don't really know what he did during WWII.

On May 23, he left Leyte for Mindoro aboard PT 245. He was then assigned to Squadron 40 for duty. Then my dad said that PT Boat 288 was burned at the end of the war. and then Decommissioned Squadron 40 in December 1945. Saved Bot 59I (I as in India). Departed PT Base 17 out of Samar Island for Tubabao-Receiving Station in early December and departed Tubabao in late December 1945. Finally "Headed Home"!

Frank J Andruss Sr:

Sir:

Thanks for your response. Unsure if Arlene is a cousin of mine or not. However, my father and his brothers were all born in Buffalo, NY. I only have two younger uncles that are still alive today. I even think that my oldest uncle that is still alive today, also severed in the U.S. Navy. I'll give him a call today and get back with you.

Paul

P.S. My father's side of the family was huge when it came to dependents. One uncle had 10-kids; my parents had 5; my next youngest uncle had 12-kids and the youngest had 13-kids. That's the way it was with large Catholic Families years ago. I joined the Air Force in 1969 and left shortly after my 19th Birthday. Never bother communicating with any of the cousins since (with the exception of my uncles, especially after the loss of my dad in 2008).

By the way, all this information that I recently posted on your forum is from a log that I photographed info from in my dad's condo the day he was buried. Since I am the only one that served my country in my family, my siblings thought it would be best that I got his uniform. I also have the flag that was draped over his casket when taps was played, mounted in a flag case sitting on my mantel in my living room.

Oh, by the way, my dad have numerous Elco PT Magazines in a metal cabinet that was in our basement when we were kids. It had glossy pages of various PT Boats skimming over the water. I was proud of my dad as most sons and daughters could have been for serving their country, OR even as I did. My adult children are proud of me too.

Thanks again for all that you can "dig up".

Respectfully,

Paul Vollmer
