Not long ago we settled our conversation about the boat that was beached in the movie. A couple of questions popped into my head. One, the boat they launched back into the water at Dad's place, was this a real PT BOAT, and in the scene where the boat was on the trailer, was this a real boat...........

Frank,
The "Dad's shipyard" and flatbed trailer-scene boats in the film sure looked like real 80' Elcos to me, but, you know the movies -- they're supposed to.
I would have thought the "Dad's shipyard" boat was real, at least...

Drew, I watched that scene again at Dad's, and I must say she sure looks like a real Elco to me. Unless we can find someone from that movie, or written proof it's all open to speculation.

Hi Frank, The Boat on Dads Railway looks to be the 77' boat they had while the Boat on the trailer appears to be a bit of a ringin(but not an 80 Elco, chine at the bow is low)
After a bit of back and forth with the movie the most apperant differance is on the rear deck were the Rope Chocks are not visible in the scenes of the boat on the trailer wereas the ones on the boat at Dads are quite apperant, the best scenes to see this is when the sailor is running along the deck,and the scene were the sailor throws the sledgehammer after knocking the chock from under the rear of the boat.
This scene is at a much greater angle but the Chock is still quite visble
The rudders also look a little differant altough this is a little hard to say for sure.
It would be interesting to find out for sure if someone is around that still knows?

Great observation David. Thinking about it, I would suggest that the Navy Department might not want one of the boats on any trailer or flatbed. I may be way off base here with this way of thinking, but again all you have to go by is video from 67 years ago, and no documentation to prove what was used.

Guys;
The only one that I kow is still around, is John Iles, I know he did all the wheel work for "PT 41"(which was his own PT 141 RON 4). However,
I don't know how much of the other filming he was able to witness.
Take care

Interesting, as I thought Montgomery did most of the wheel work for the movie, although no doubt that he did dock the boat. Wish we could contact John and ask him.
