I still haven't decided what boat thiswill be but I'm plugging away on the hull anyway. I emailed Lindberg and asked them for a replacement prop shaft support, a 20 mm gun base, mount and wheel and another horn.

I just mounted a middle prop shaft and now need to decide whether to use the Lindberg shafts and housing with a smaller diameter threaded section prop which seem to be hard to get or one of my Graupner shafts and props. If I use the Graupner shaft I'll need to redo the shaft fairing where it exits the hull as the one I've built is for the smaller diameter Lindberg shaft.

I also built two of the three bulkheads I plan to have in this model. The vone left to build is the one I'm placing just forward of the rudders. Ifigure the two most likely areas of water ingress into the hull are the rudders or the prop shafts. The prop shafts will be going through the foremost of the three bulkheads fairly high up. Thus iwill have three fairly watertight compartments when this model is done.

I figure to run this model on either the center shaft only or the two outboard shafts only. The single center shaft will give the longest run time.

This is the boat I posted images of a long time ago and have just recently felt like working on again - or any models for that matter. As such, most of the upper deck stuff I've either scratch-built or modified is forthe 80' Elco PT-103 Classof boats. I haven't done the torpedo tube mounts yet and may still change this to a Higgins boat with roll-off torpedoes.

When I figure out how to get to the images section of this forum I'll see about uploading some more in-progress images for those of you who are interested in such things.

Cheers from Peter

Remember....the key to success with an RC PT boat is LIGHT!!!!! It would be lighter to just put some foam in the boat up forward than to put in bulkheads. Unless of course your going glow powered?

Dam the torpedoes...full speed ahead!

Well seeing as how I have cut out the thick deck plastic from under the charthouse and the dayroom I don't think the extra bulkheads made from 1 mm thick styrene will be adding any weight to the model.

Besides which my RC boats are all set up for long running time as opposed to high speed running. With that in mind I now have three unused Graupner Speed 400 7.2 volt motors I won't be using or needing for anything else.

Cheers from Peter

I agree with Michael. Bulkheads are not needed and will only add weight and complexity. More important is some under deck stiffeners, either cross bracing or deck to hull webbing (or both). I have also stiffened the hatch/cabin assembly as it can flex enough to let water in. The gap between the deck on the hatch and the hole in the deck on the hull is another point that water can get in. Keep that tight.
And don't forget the spray rails on the hull. That alone is a huge (I can't say it enough) improvement to running the boat in the water.
Everyone by now is aware that I am a fan of a single gearmotor drive for 1:32 scale. But, the tiny brushless stuff coming out is getting very tempting. At our last outing, we had a pair of Lindy PT's running. Mine has a speed 400 on a geardrive, the other a straight drive 05 can motor. He was a tad faster, but at a fraction of the run time.
Look for my videos of my boat in very rough water on Youtube under my handle 'modelsbydave'.
And I did post some build photos in the picture section here and on rcgroups.

A bulkhead or two are not any heavier than the thick deck plastic I cut out of the deck under where the charthouse and the day cabin go. On my other boat I stiffened the deck with cross members of balsa wood.

I'm building my boat for running endurance not speed. I'd much rather be able to spend two hours running a model at a leisurely pace at the local pond than fifteen minutes running a high speed model.

At one time Iwas going to put three speed motors in this model but after seeing the dismal run time with two of them on my other boat I decided on endurance over speed.

I have the center shaft installed and let the hull sit in the full bathtub over night to see if there is any water seepage. None as of 1/2 hour ago.

I'll also be adding thin styrene strips all around the area of the chartroom which is where I access the battery(s) from. That will make the charthouse sit on the deck snug and will keep any deck water from entering the hull. It worked very well on my other two Lindberd boats.

I also added the hull splash rails to the other boats before I attached the main deck. I know the difference the splash rail makes to performance and to the looks of the hull.

What gear drive do you use with your Speed 400 motor?

Cheers from Peter

Where are the photo's. WE NEED PHOTO's. Must keep track of the work you are doing in the building stages, that's half the fun.

Frank.

There are some images of the early stages of this build somewhere on this site in a thread I started before my hiatus.

Right now, I haven't been able to figure out how to access the photo area of this forum. I don't have Micro Shaft Office installed on this new laptop nor do I intend to install such aproprietary program again. All my Micro Shaft documents that I created on my old desktop PC and tried to use on this laptop will not open in anything else I have. I'm not paying Micro Shaft's price just to gai access to a few things.

Okay, I just figured out a way to view the Photo Positng Instructions document. Wrg Pad opens it as just a bunch of gibberish.

Later I'll ge t some images taken of the inner hull work thus fareven though there isn't much to see on it. The deck hasn't progressed much since my last images were posted elsewhere on this forum. I hope to make progress on the torpedo tubes mounts be this weekend. I want to get this model out on the pond soon.

Right now I'm trying to remember how to connect the speed control, BEC, two servos and the receiver so thatI'll have power and control of the motor and thetwo rudders.

Images will follow as soon as I take them.

Cheers

Got the electronics figure out finally.

Just need to plan where to install them for best initial balance and ease of later access and any needed adjustments. Then it's ono the deck stiffeners and from there it's back to the torpedo tubes mounts.

On reason for the long hiatus from this project was that I thought I'd made the entire bridge area too high. I forgot I was using a 1/35 figure to check it instead of the 1/32 crewman that should have been used. With the 1/32 scale crewman in place everything looks much better.

Cheers

My 196 boat has the steering servo pretty far aft and the large battery (8 cell, 3000mah nimh) over the prop shaft, a bit aft of the small motor bulkead. The motor, esc and rx are forward of the bulkhad. The esc is an older Traxxas unit with a large heat sink so it works well as a trim weight. If I had my way I would swap out the nimh for a 5000mah lipo pack to lighten the stern.
