A few weeks back I posted some photos of my recently completed Revell P.T. 109 w/WEM PE. I was not satisfied with the "rope" used to secure the 37 mm gun on the bow and several folks commented, justly, that it did not look appropriate. After cruising the craft shops and departments of stores I finally found some three strand hemp string. I was able to separate out one strand, run it through bee's wax and after carefully cutting away the hawser sized original, replace it with something I hope is more appropriate to the scale of the model. I secured the 37 in a manner intended to represent an ad hoc mount intended just to get it on board to prevent a "requisition" by another crew while the 109 was on patrol, to be combat mounted later.

Now for the pics. The first one is of the original 37mm mounting:

Now the improved and revised version:

Thanks for taking time to check out my submission.

As a follow up to the prior post, the orange peel effect was actually intentional. I was attempting, with I think very limited success, to depict what the paint work might look like on a boat exposed to the hostile Solomon Islands climate, blazing sun, salt water, etc., combined with limited maintenance. I am the first to admit that I have much to learn by way of weathering. I came back to ship modeling about three years ago after over thirty years away and have, up until recently, concentrated simply on re-mastering old assembly skills and learning new ones, especially PE. Hopefully future efforts will prove more successful in my efforts at weathering.

I appreciate your taking time to check out my contribution and to comment on it.

Bob

Hi Bob,
If you are building the Italeri 1/35 PT 596, look on page 165 to 167 for color pictures
of weathering and camouflage of my recently published book AMERICAN PT BOATS IN
WW II, vol. II. I think there are other books on the subject. Read them all before you
start. Lots of luck.

Victor, I have your book and I'll check out those photographs. Thanks for the heads up. I'm just getting started on the 596. I have the base coats down on the deck, chart house, day room, vents, etc., and on the hull. I'm just now getting ready to start applying the Gator's Mask I bought to do the camouflage.

BTW, what did you think of my humble effort on the old Revell 109? I'm hoping that Italieri will come through this year and give us an accurate 103 class boat that doesn't require a lot of scratch building to make an accurate '42 - '43 P.T. boat. I don't think I'll do her as the 109, been there, done that, even if it was just in 1/72, but that leaves a lot of other 103 class boats to model.

Thanks again for the heads up!

Bob
