Now that ITALERI has announced a 103 Class PT boat in 1/35 scale I'm wondering what to do with my unbuilt PT-596 kit. Some parts are off the sprue but nothing has been assembled yet. My interest in PT boats ends with the 103 Class of boats because the deck arnament was so much simpler and there wren't a lot of other pesky parts that in 1/35 scale break far too easily on a radio controlled model. I might just Kijiji the 596 kit once the 109 kit is released provided that reviews fo the latter don't point out a slew of errors in the kit.

How many of you will prefer a 103 Class model boat over the later war variannts?

Cheers from Peter

Peter,

You meant Italeri, not Lindberg, right?

I personally prefer the PT 103-class boats, because my main interest in PTs is during the early and mid-part of the war, particularly in the Guadalcanal, Russells, New Georgia, and New Guinea campaigns.

I would think this new 103-class boat kit could be fairly easily upgraded to show several modifications such as the first couple radar setups, or added deck guns, particularly if any aftermarket companies were to produce such items.

I'd also think you could sell your unbuilt PT 596 kit to a willing buyer for not much less than what you paid for it -- try Ebay. If you can afford it, keep the 596 kit, and you could use parts from it to convert the 103-class boat into a mid-war PT with roll-off rack Mark XIII torpedoes and a 40mm gun on the stern.

OOPS! Thanks for pointing that out. I was even within the time frame that allowed me to correct it.

Cheers
