Hello,
I came across these photos when I was scanning the photos from WW2 PT Boat veteran Al McCready PT491 RON33. He was a Signalman that became a Quartermaster. He spent time in Melville and NY Navy Yard getting Radar Training. These two pics were taken in NY Navy Yard Showing Vospers boats possibly HM MTB342 and 344 possibly? Also his Melville Certificate and a Life Magazine ad about PT Boats.

Al and Radar Class in NY Navy Yard with Vosper HM MTB-342 and HM MTB-344 in background (early 1943)

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's the grate and cat for you, mate Those are British Power Boat designed hulls. Given the numbers stated, they are probably some of the Canadian Power Boat MTBs (332-343) which were converted to HSLs shortly after completion.

MTB344 was an experimental 60' Thornycroft hydroplane.

Thanks AL,
I was a bit confused, since I knew they were not Elco 80 footers, nor could they possibly have been 77 foot Elcos with those particular numbers. I can clearly see the number 342 on the graceful bow that resembles the 70 foot Elco PT9, so I kind of guessed they may be built for the Brits by somebody. I was just checking if somebody would catch it! You passed the test. Hah! Jerry

Hey there Jerry.

Is that the same class of Vosper as the recently released Italeir 1/35 dcale kit?

Cheers from Peter

Are all those early Elco and Vosper boats simply a bad copy of the British Power Boat design anyway? Kind of hard to tell the difference just looking at the bow!!!
