Hello Message Boarders.
I was hoping that somebody may be able to identify these rating badge. I found them in a WW2 PT Boat Vets Scrapbook. All the stuff in the book is from around 1943 in Melville RI and Boston Area. He was a Signalman and a Quartermaster. The size of the badge appears to be from a WAVE uniform, because it is smaller than a patch for a male uniform. I have NO IDEA what it is!!! I looked in the 1943 and 1944 BlueJackets manual and they were of no help. Does anybody here know what rate this square knot is? Also, I am sure it s NOT an Ex-Apprentice, because that is a granny knot patch worn at the V of the jumper and not on the sleeve like this. Thanks Jerry

Hi Gary,
So it looks like it may be a "Apprentice Petty Officer, First Class", a rank used in Boot Camp? I dont remember having such Rating Badges in used during my time at boot camp. Maybe this was an older tradition that was phased out during WW2 and only used in RTC San Diego? Curious. Thanks for your help. I am still not sure I understand what it was. Jerry

Jerry: I went through boot camp in San Diego - Company 43-91. Our Company Commander who was a former football player and Chief Petty Officer appointed a apprentice seaman from our ranks to help him out. He had been a Boy Scout and had some familiarity with marching people. He assisted the C.C. in getting us lined up and called cadence sometimes when we marched which was everywhere we went. I don't recall the details of the badge he wore but he did wear a sleeve badge.

These badges are "apprentice Petty Officer" badges. They were used at training stations (Boot Camps) to identify the recruits that were chosen or assigned to positions of responsibility within the training unit.

This began in 1918 and while they were the same design as the regular PO badges, they were smaller. They were used until about 1975.

(This comes from the book United States Rating Badges and Marks, 1833 to 2008 by John A Stacey.)

Can you please tell me where to find that reference in the book - I have been researching it since the original question was asked and the only thing I have been able to find is a badge called an ex-apprentice badge which was a small rectangular badge worn just below the opening of the neck on the front of the jumper - The problem with that insignia is that it is not a square knot but a figure 8 knot - I went back and looked through my Boot Camp book from when I went through in 1965 but didn't find any pictures that would help. Thanks for your help - I thought it would be easy to find and it's becoming an obsession.

It's the 2008 version, on pages 48 - 50.

Charlie thanks so much - it was one of those little things that was making me crazy - now I can get some sleep - I make fun of my wife when she does it so I don't think I'll mention this little thread.
