The uniform of the day in the Solomons was just about anything you wanted to wear. Most of the guys on my boat wore white Navy issue skivvy shorts or cut off dungarees during the day. No shirts. We had Marine rough out shoes. I cut the tops off mine and made oxfords out of them. When going on patrol at night we wore either Navy dungarees or Army green long pants. It was cool at night and rained a lot also hot shell casings didn't work well with shorts. To take the stiffeness and color out of our new dungarees, we would run a line through the belt loops and drag them behind the boat for a while. Made them look "salty". Our officers wore khaki pants with either khaki shirt or white Navy issue tee shirt. On page 223 of "At Close Quarters" is a picture of some of our crew changing engines at Green Island. Note that Mr. McLane, our skipper, is in khaki's long pants.. The rest of the crew is in the uniform of the day. No shirts. Toward the end of my stay at Green Island. Orders came out that we had to wear long pants to chow. Did'nt have to wear shirts. We were not pleased with that order. We liked comfort. Our life jackets were dark gray. You can see them tied on the rail around the gun turret.
