Good point about the $1Million. We were able to restore the PT658 on a shoestring budget however, using volunteers for ~300K. The volunteers really make a huge difference! Jerry

Kind of like what, as I understand it, what they did for the movie P.T. 109, they took a bunch of Vosper hulls and modified the top works to look like 103 class Elcos. Did a pretty good job to, as I remember from the movie, even down to the throttle quadrant.

They did a beautiful job in making those boats look just like Elco's. I think they were five feet longer then the Elco's. I often wonder what became of those boats used for the movie PT-109. I heard plenty of rumors, but never found out anything that was concrete. PT-109 still remains one of my all time favorite movies, along with They Were Expendable. PT 109 was the single most reason I love the boats as much as I do, and today own and operate "The Mosquito Fleet Exhibit". I was so very lucky to have met and become friends with several original 109 crewmen............

After seeing the PT-109 trailer on U-Tube (thanks, Frankie) I just find it hard to reconcile the fact that the top of the cockpit only looks to be about waist high. Can they really have used 85-footers for the shoot? It sure seems as though the topsides are scaled down, not up.

They could be the right scale Will, but because it would be tough to shoot the actors in the cockpit, they may have put in a higher step up platform in there. This would make it easier to film and see both Robertson and Hardin................

I interviewed a vet who said they used to stack things all over the place for storage, this was not a PT boat but a crash boat and a landing craft guy said the same thing. Both said it was to see better over any activity in front of you and in the case of the landing craft gentleman, he said they stuck stuff everywhere. Supplies going in and wounded heading back. One on occasion he said he was standing on two cases of PBR so some of the wounded coming back off the beach could have a beer. I imagine for the movie it would be something for the camera and director, so you could show more action from the actors etc.
