hi,

in a little more than 3 weeks i will be in the philippines trying to track down the locations were my father served on the 127 boat.

one of the places of interest will be were the boats were burned. i have several photos of some of the boats beached and torched.

and, i can't remember if i've asked this before or not, so.....

i know the main central PI base was on the south of samar located near the town of salcedo. but, does any one have any notion of exactly where the boats met their end? any hints, or suggestions might be a great help.

i'm hoping against hope that there might be some elderly locals who might have some knowledge. but, not holding my breath.

thanks much for any thoughts.

PT 127: A member of my boat crew Warren Trosclair was on duty and helped burn the boats at Base 17 on Samar. I was at Base 17 but left to come home before they burned the boats. I am in contact with Warren all time and if you would like to talk to him give me your email and I can give you his telephone number.

My grandfather's account of the burning...not too many physical details, but FWIW:

As for the base location, someone posted a link on here to a USN historical site describing all the WWII Pacific base locations in detail - I can't remember what it was but based on that is where I put the "peg" for Base 17 on this map:

As for the specific burn location off the base...

Good luck with this once in a life-time visit. I hope that you are able to accomplish everything you are setting out to do. It should be a real thrill to walk in those areas that the PT BOAT guys did. I look forward to seeing many of the photos you will be taking, and your accounts of the areas visited. Have a safe and enjoyable trip..............

the location you have for the pt base is the same one that i came up with from other sources, so, we will see.

thanks again.

For anyone interested, I have located the site of PT Base 17 & been there to confirm its location.

If you google maps for "mercedes Samar Philippines" BoBon point is 4.8 Km west down the old access road (easily matched to the base access road in period photos)

There are remains of the 3 main jetty structures. There is also some remains of an old steel fuel barge on the bottom in the harbour. The last of the timbers from the boats rotted away some years ago according to the locals.

The locals pointed out to me the concrete foundations for the searchlight tower which guarded the base entrance. I can just make the foundations out on the satellite image now I know where to look.

If anyone would like the photo email me. It has the names of the carpenter crew who built the tower in the concrete.

The locals also pointed out the location of the burial trench where some remaining material was bulldozed before the base was abandoned.

testing to see if the photograph uploads

Where is it?

Where was the searchlight?

If anyone wants to copy these images & repost them in a more manageable format than my dropbox loads, please do

Want more photos of the jetty & the town? Sing out!
