Lt. Hamlin Smith, USNR, aged 92, showing his grandchilden the Elco at Fall River maybe for the last time. Thank you Don Shannon for a great tour ... it meant a lot to the skipper and his grandchildren. I can't wait to see the new 50cal mount. Good work ... Don. For those that have not seen this exhibit ... you are really missing something. My dad was not able to get the engines started ... he is not a motor mac. He could not launch at torpedo as he is not a torpedoman. I am sure in his mind he was patrolling the coast of Vella Lavella or Kolombangara with an eye and ear out for Zekes.

Nat,

Great photo -- please wish your Dad well from all of us (I think I can speak without fear of contradiction on this point ) PT boat buffs.

Although my curiosity about the below-decks arrangement of an 80' Elco have been satisfied by numerous photos taken of that boat at Fall River, I've got to get up there one of these days and tour it -- above AND below decks!

What an awesome thing to be able to do! My brother and I were able to do the visit to Fall River with our Dad-Bill Sherry-PT 342, Ron 24 in 2004 and it brought such closure. Dad died a few years later but we will never forget the visit and how kind and generous everyone was-especially Don Shannon. Glad you were able to do it with your Dad and Grandfather.

Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far way, when I was 6, my dad took me to see the just released "P.T. 109". I never got over it! A few months ago, thanks to the magic of DVD, I was able to share that experience with my 7 year old grandson. I think the fix took, as he is now fascinated by P.T. 109, which I'm now building for him.

The Fall River Museum is on the "must do" list with both of my grandchildren, the eldest of the two being a 10 year old girl, who is still at the stage of being interested in whatever her "Pop" is interested in. I know that won't last, but I'm enjoying it while it does.

Last spring I had the true treat of taking them to the Museum of Science and Industry on a spring break trip to Chicago and took the through the U-505. They were wide eyed, especially when I explained to them what that "pinging" noise was and what it meant to the men in that sub when they heard it. Being able to share these museum ships with your kids and/or grand kids is a genuine treat.

A big "thank you" to all the folks who help maintain the Fall River Museum and all of the museum ships. These things couldn't exist without the volunteer help they get. If they disappear, it will be a great loss to us all.
