Hello, NEW PHOTOS ADDED 2/20/07

I'm building the new 1/35 PT596 kit and trying to back date it to a RON 33 boat in the mid-late '44 time frame. PT495 looks like the individual boat. I have a few photos of the 490, 491 and 495 boat and have used them as a guide.

I have make a mount for the 37mm and located it more forward. I've removed the raft mount and nav light mounts from the cabin roof and fabricated a set of the earlier style light for the side of the cabin.

The hardest task so far has been fabricating the SO radar done and mask.

I plan on casting 2 additional 20mm and mounts to attach in front of the forward torpedoes.

From my photo I can see the 495 had only 1 bow vent. It was the late type and located in the same location as the forward early style vent.

I turned the forward deck hatch to hinge at the rear. 596 has the hinge at the front.

I plan on painting it in 31/5P. It will use Deck Green and Navy Green with either Ocean Green or MTB Green. Not sure whether I will carry any of the 5-OG or MTB Green onto the deck.

Here is a link to some photos of the WIP. Most of the pieces at just sitting on the deck prior to painting the subassemblies.

I would appreciate any comment or advice. I've gotten some input from Al and Garth and the guys at WEM and it has been very helpful. Thanks.

If anybody has photos of the RON 33 boats, I would love to see them.

I would also like to find some drawings or information on the 20 and 37 mm mounts, Mk10 I think. It is my understanding that the 37 was often mounted in a Mk10 that had been cut down by 8 1/4".

Thanks,

Ed

You are doing a great job! Italeri has sure done an excellent job with that model, the detail is incredible. For some photos of PT 495 "Gentleman Jim" go to this link:
www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ships/PT/PT-495.html

I will eventually get one to make a model of either a RON 29 or RON 34 boat.
Keep Charging!
Take care,

Thanks Ted.
I had found those photos a couple of weeks ago. The side shot is, I think, from later in the war. It has SO-3 radar and it looks like 31/20L paint. The lower photo is an earlier shot, I think, and that is what I'm using to pattern my deck features. Like the single late style vent located near the 37mm.
From the side of the hull it looks like a different paint pattern too. I'm guessing 31/5P.

There are photos of the 490 and 491 on the same site. In fact, the photos of all 3 are just slices from a larger photo. 495 is between the 490 and 491. In the photos of the other boats you can pick up details about the 495, like the SO radar and boat number on the dome.

There was a post a few days ago by "area51" in a thread called "PT school". In it he says he served on the 497 in RON 33. I have posted a contact request. I hope he sees it. I would love to ask him a few questions.

Thanks for the kind words. The more i look, the more i need to change. Al Ross just sent me a drawing of the 37mm, early and late, and it looks like i have even more modifications to make!

Ed,

Thanks for posting those great photos of your work-in-progress on the 596 kit.
It's the "first look" many of us have had at this new model, and it looks great.

This is one of the best plastic models I have ever seen and you are doing a super Bang up job of putting her together. I will certainly look into purchasing one for my Exhibit. Can't have enough PT BOATS you know. Is there a phone number to contact Italeri directly? I would love to talk with their Promotions department.

They have been on ebay for the last month or so, the cheapest I have seen was $86.00.

Don't get discouraged, you are doing great and you have a great model to start with! If you want a hint of what us modelers had to do if we decided to make a 495 model 10 years ago, just buy a Lindberg PT 109 and dedicate about 6 months to nothing but conversion and fabrication. Fortunatly I was unemployed and in my early 20's when I built my 1/32nd scale fall 1944 and my Jan 1945 (1/72nd scale), both took a combined 2 months. When I was on active duty in Panama, my 1/32nd PT 48, a microscale hull model, took me almost 2 years(between deployments and work), I made a cast copy of the hull so I can make a model of PT 59 as a Gunboat, that was in 1998, The cabin is done, the radar is done, the 40mm's are done, the hull and deck is ready, the .50's are another story, it still is not finished and sits on a shelf in my garage today.
Ed, enjoy your adventure!!! and post photos when you are done!
Take care,
TED

Thanks everyone. I just added 3 new photos of the modified 37mm. I cut down the barrel length and re-drilled the end.
I also made an early mag instead of the factory unit used on 596.

I need to do more mount work and add some grips.

I apprciate the kind words. Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

It doesn't look like it from the photos of all the parts sprues on the Perth Military Modeler's site you provided the link to, but does the kit have any crew figures with it?

I seem to remember a blurb in some of the pre-release advertising for the kit that mentioned figures...

The photos only show a fraction of the parts but, sadly, there are no figures. Sure wish it did.
