Greetings all,
I'm down to the Torpedo Tube Training gear. Specifically the rod that cranks the tube out. Looking at photos of the rod (see topic on torpedo tube guides) it doesn't appear to have any threads. However the torpedo tube hardware drawings I have show threads. Does anyone have any information about this?
Thank you
Dave

David,

The torpedo tube training gear was a simple ball screw device. The ball screw, the only threaded part layes parrallel to the deck. The crack is engages to a "bolt" top of a universal joint that when cranked turns the ball screw. Nothing complicated about this device at all.

Thanks Bill,
What I'm trying to understand is if the threads are exposited or visible. The photos indicate that it isn't but I can't really tell from the drawings.
Thanks
Dave

If you look at the two photos of the training gear in the Torpedo Tube Guides thread, you can just make out the threads on the rods. The threads would have to be completely exposed to pass through the threaded pivoting block on the front of the forward turpedo tube saddle.

In concept, it's similar to a scissors jack for a car.

Thanks Al,
I can't see it but it makes sense to me. I'm thinking about ordering some threaded rod which is under 1mm outside diameter. I need to give it a good look to make sure it doesn't look overdone. Otherwise I'm looking at scribing some plastic rod. I have to think on on this one for a bit.

I looked at Frank Johnson's book on page 72 ( I think). I can see the threads in the bar there. I ordered some threaded bar that is slightly smaller than 1mm in diameter. This is probably a little over sized but I'm hoping it will look good enough. I'm looking forward to sharing this with you all.
