Earl:
As you remember the medical staff required all personell to take atabrine tablets daily to combat malaria. Some guys hated them and wouldn't take them but I always took what ever they gave me. Most of the time these tablets were placed on our trays when we went through the chow line. However if you recall at either Treasury or Green they had a different system to make every one take atabrine. A pharmacist mate stood at the end of the chow line - had everyone open their mouth and he threw the pills down our throat. If you ate you took atabrine just that simple. Being a cook there I thought you might remember.
Did you happen to know our P.T. 242 cook - Hilland B. "Bill" Knapp from Rochester,NY?

THANKS cj WILL POST THIS NOW. I REMEMBER WELL THE LITTLE YELLOW TABLETS CALLED ATABRINE.THEY WERE VERY BITTER And,if you took them for a while, they tended to tint your skin yellow.i was base cook at tulagi, rendova, green, treasury, sterling and was assigned as cook on pt 108 at emirau.sent home for thirty days and reassigned to base 17 at ormoc,p.i. i think the men went TO the pharmacist mate to get their atabrineand,at either green or rendova, there was a P>M at the ernd of the chow line to pass them out.i do not know of the "bill" you mentioned,by name.at rendova,i think, the boats went into the foliage at the beach edge and made there berths, they then cut aweay the foliage.made for good camoflage.there was a path from the boats to the beach gallley.since the boats and beach force was seperated so much by boat and beach terminology it was not usual for us to know each other by name.mostly by sight.that is unless, you were on a boat and knew your crew members or at the galley and knew the cooks, etc there. sorry i couldn't help more.age , catching up, i guess earl
