Hi guys!

I've looked at the Ross and Lambert Allied Coastal Forces Volume II line drawings and it appears to me that they show 4 cleats on the 103 series boats.
Two at the stern and two on the waist.

However, Victor Chun's book PT Boats of WWII has a line drawing showing
6 cleats. Two at the stern, two on the waist and two on the bow.

But, I looked at several pictures of boats in action and it appears that there
may be as many as 8 cleats. Two at the stern, two on the waist and 4 on
the bow.

If I remember correctly. the revell kit, before I removed them, had 8 cleats on the boat.

So, which is it?

Thanks,
GregB

The Elco parts catalog Dick scanned for us shows 8 for most (early) boats, check page 251:

I forgot to apply the proper amount of PT confusion. Deck arrangement drawings for PTs 103-196 and 314-367 don't show the forward cleats between frames 5 and 6.

Photos on Gene's site, http://pt-king.gdinc.com/index2.html, show the 107 (still stateside) as not having the forward cleats, and a 140's boat in the Pacific as having them.

Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. I think 8 is the number after looking at more pictures.
That means that I screwed up. I'm using the WEM photo-etch set and didn't like the thinness of the single cleats so in my haste to put them on, I doubled the PE parts up to make them thicker. After doing that and putting them on
I realized that I didn't have enough for 8 cleats, only 5.

CRAP, CRAP, CRAP. Word to the wise, PLAN, PLAN, PLAN before applying.

So now I have to either take the PE parts off or figure out a way to scratch 4 more cleats that closely resemble the PE parts already on the boat.

Thanks,
GregB

Greg,

If you used CA glue on the cleats, soak them in acetone; they should separate.

Greg, once you get back on track you can thicken up the cletes with some thick CA or PVA glue. Just dab it on but not to thick and let it dry. Practice with something else before you use it on the final parts.

I didn't do this on my 109 but I've used this technique on other PE with success.

Good luck
Dave

They came apart easier than I thought they would, just used a blade to
pop them apart. Actually, after re-applying them as a single piece they don't look as bad as I thought they would. So I'm happy with them.
