Jerry Gilmartin recently published a number of pictures of various 40mm RSLs in response to questions about the 16 round (4 clip) metal ammo can seen on many PT's. One of the pictures was the 588 boat and showed two rows of the metal cans set one above the other in a rack that appears to be fabricated from angle iron or some other field expedient product - Does anyone have photos of this boat or suggest where I might be able to get some pictures that would show any detail as to how the rack was fabricated? I was discussing a project with Dave Waples that might be fun in the form of doing some rear deck dioramas in 1/35 showing several 40mm installations with different mounts and different RSL setups and configurations. Any thoughts or help on finding additional details would be greatly appreciated.

I found a couple of photos of the set up for these cans, although not on the boat you are looking for. From what I can tell, I would guess they were made in the Field, certainly not standard equipment coming out of the factories. Simple metal welded together so the cans would fit tight, and not slip while underway. I do not have any drawings of such in my collection of photo's, but with the photo's Jerry provided, and from what I can see, you should have no trouble making them to fit your model.............

On ELCO reel 3, frames 75, 76 show the wooden storage lockers of the type seen on PT 196. Interestingly, the interior shows four of the metal cans stacked inside. The tall open wooden racks are frames 77-80, 93-94.

Thanks for the information on all the locations - worse comes to worse I will just pretend I'm at a repair facility and someone needs some racks welded up - grab the angle iron and a torch.
