Nice shot of the mount Al. We will of course change the top part of the mount to accept a .30 caliber machine gun. Thanks Dick for trying to blow up that tower mount and the site map.

Thanks Jerry for sending the digital photo.

Frank, below is the enlargement fro the photo Jerry send us, it is much better than my earlier attempt but still not good. I still think the PT-26 shot is going to be a real help. In Jerry's photo it does appear that the upper receiving bracket holding the machine gun cradle is very much like the exploded drawings from Al' earlier post.

Great Bazooka shot Al, thanks. Looks like same stand but after seeing the attachment mechanism in more detail I may change my thought it looks a bit large for a single 30 cal. or 50 cal.

Dick . . .

Thanks Dick, that certainly is much better and gives a better view of the pintal mount needed for those .30 caliber guns.

Frank and Dick,
Here are a couple of shots of John Akin's PT27. They show those same tripods. Just in case it helps. Jerry

Thanks Jerry. I noticed in one of the shots, what looks to be a dual .30 caliber machine gun on the bow. I also see a Dingy on the bow, which it seems that some boats found favor.

Hi Frank,
Yes it certainly looks like twin 30 caliber Lewis Machine guns to me, the kind with the round magazines on top. This is as opposed to the Browning 30 cal machine gun. I am sure other people can verify that is the type they had. Jerry

I suspect that these are .30 Browings. The only twin Lewis mounts on the ELCOs that I am aware of are those fitted to the 70' PTs (first photo) after being modified for transfer to the RN.

Note the difference in the barrel diameters, mounts, and spacing between the guns. Those on PT27 appear to have the side-mounted ammo boxes and their barrels are approximately the same diameter as the pipe tripods while those on the Lewis guns are much larger than the shaft on their pedestals (which appears to be about the same diameter as the pipe legs on the tripod).

Al

Hey AL, I love that photo you posted! I was thinking of that one in the back of my mind while searching for the ones I posted. I had no idea they looked like that or that the brownings were ever twinned, I learn something new every day on this board! Thanks again for enlightening me! I bet Frank is interested as well! Jerry

Thanks guys but I could tell from the photo that they were not Lewis Guns, in fact Alex Johnson built a twin .30 caliber mount for our PT-374 project last year, I did not see an ammo box on the original photo of PT-66 while tied up on the Morobe River, but they must have had one to hold the ammo belt in place. Thanks for blowing up the photo Al...............
