Here's another 2-1/2 cents worth - - - Alex sent me a hi-res scan on the 66/68 photo (Morobe River). I isolated areas that have been topics of discussion. In the first photo the number on the front of the cabin is now looking like 66.
As has been mention by Jerry and Will, I think the next photo shows an in-the-field mod in the form of a canvas covered scoop. Like Jerry said it does appear to be a simple wooden frame covered with canvas and use on the forward hatch to force fresh air down into, at least, the crew quarters.
Seeing Alex's second photo post of the 66 underway I noticed the side windows were canvas covered. As you can see in the third photo the canvas has been mostly removed from the cabin side windows, but still handing by one attachments. See the red circled object.
The fourth photo is just a slightly enhanced photo of Alex's second photo post - really nice shoot.

Dick
With the enhanced photo, it now seems that the glass has been removed from the side chart house windows, which might be the reason for the canvas added. It also seems that the forward cabin windows are painted from the inside. I know in your illustration Dick, it shows the canvas running across those same windows. I am still interested in the type mount used on that forward single .50, and I must also add that those flash suppressors are the largest I have seen. Just wondering if there are drawings available for those odd looking tower mounts for the single .30 caliber guns. This gets more fun with each passing post........

Must be my week to stumble upon things. Jeff, you were right, found this National Archives xeroxed form for 80-G-53844 featuring the Morobe River 77'er. (Date) July & Aug 1943 ( Taken By) CPU-3

Nice Wayne, it's great seeing images with a reasonable proof of when taken.
Thank you for going through that effort Dick, you're master of squeezing every detail out of an image!
Frank, does it look to you like they added (or removed) a tubular frame mounted .30 between the two images? I only see one on the Morobe River shot.

Jeff
You could be right. I have tried to spot the second tower mount for that gun, but I could not spot it. What makes it pretty tough is the fact the guys are crowded on deck, right in the area we need to look for it. Maybe Dick can enhance this area so we can try and see if it's there.

Second machine-gun mount - I've outlined two area the lower red outline shows what appears to be part of a tubular leg. While the upper red outline indicates what could be a canvas shroud over the machine-gun. Another interesting item that can be seen is the officer facing us (cigarette in his mouth), appears to be leaning his butt up against something with his upper body leaning forward slightly. He could very well be bracing himself against the port side gun mount. See photo below.

Good eyeballing Dick, the angles look about right. I'm POSITIVE that it might be there. If I were modeling the boat, I'd add the second gun especially since the other photos show it.

I agree with Jeff about mounting the second gun. In the final analysis, no one can prove the gun ISN'T there.

The second gun will be added to our 66 project, although without seeing these type towers for the .30 caliber guns, it will be hard to see how they were made. As stated, I am still uncertain as to what type of mount they used for that single .50 up front. Not a big problem, I still think the hardest thing to do will be the Camo Scheme, which as we know was hand painted on using mops and brushes.
