Hello Guys

Well I have pretty much decided on my next project. This is of course, after Stan does the RIDE ON TOY, and finishes the PT-109 ATTACK CATS restoration project, and after the USS EAGLE project. In short, this would be sometime next year. I have decided to do PT-66, which I am sure we have all seen that wonderful photo of the boat tied up in the River in 1942, with that dazzling camo pattern. I would love it if anyone might have any photos, drawings, the actual camo pattern colors, or anything else that would help STAN build the boat from scratch. Thanks in advance......

OK, once and for all. Is that the 66 or the 68 boat? I have heard opinions both ways.

Good Question. It has been released in many photo's (even during the War) as PT-66. I do not have evidence to dispute this claim, unless someone else might...............

I heard from Garth, who said it was the 68. I am not sure what evidence he has, so anyone have information, please let me know.......

Johnson's US PT BOATS OF WORLD WAR II identifies the upper photo as showing PT 66 and the lower photo as showing PT 68; EARLY ELCO PT BOATS identifies them just the opposite. http://www.navsource.org uses the upper photo in both the PT 66 and PT 68 entries.

They are clearly two different boats, as one has two tubes and four depth charges aft, while the other has four tubes and two depth charges forward. The camouflage patterns are very different, as well.

Photos of 68 at Melville show her with the two tube arrangement. I haven't seen any photos of 66 stateside. Since these boats were transferred directly from Melville, perhaps Charlie's book has photos of 66 before transfer. A comparison might provide some clues.

All of the photos in EARLY ELCO came directly from PTHQ, so are probably still there in the files. The number on the upper photo is almost entirely visible except that the sailor's elbow obscures the right side of the number. The book copies are not clear enough to confirm whether the second number is a 6 or 8, but the original print might be. There might be (probably are) captions on the back of the photos, as well, which should provide further clues. If someone could take a look...

Well, all I know is; that a few years ago, a crewman of the 68 boat scolded me for labeling that photo as the 66, he was adament that it was the 68 boat.

Well, unlike some people on here who swear by veterans' memories ... so much for relying on veterans' memories ...

But, hey - what do I know? Apparently squat ...

Al

I have a pretty clear photo of the top picture, and I have zoomed in many times. That elbow is certainly making things difficult, but it certainly seems to be PT-66, though I can't be 100% sure. The curvature of both numbers seem to be identical. Garth, I appreciate your input, but no need to sarcastic. I certainly take into consideration what the PT VETS relate to me, but you know the passage of time can sometimes cloud the memory. The second photo that Al has put up, certainly sheds some light onto this problem, as it is clear that both the boats are different.

We will do a bit more digging and see what we can come up with, before I have Stan put the wrong number on the boat. I appreciate all of the help from you guys with all these projects...................

Interesting point about the positionings of depth charges on the two 77'ers in question, Al. For what's it's worth, this photo of PT 68 does not show them on the foredeck.
